How to Get There
I've been coming here for over 30 years and I can say we have never had a bad stay. The hotel gardens are always spectacular. The rooms are immaculate and consistently updated. The restaurant balances the fine line with great food and a solid value. Finally, the beds are always comfortable. We just love it here.
If you can, I highly recommend a fireplace room. They've been a delight year over year.
The property is in a great location, surrounded by some eateries (Denny's, cafes) and a market (Trader Joe's) a block away. It is a few blocks away from downtown Monterey, which was perfect for us as we joined the First Night festivities with our 2 little ones.
The lobby is welcoming and staff was very generous. Our check-in was a breeze.
Our room was a Fireplace room with 2 double beds. The fireplace was a plus as it kept the room warm and relaxing. Our room was spacious, as we upgraded to this from the regular "Run of the house" room that was smaller and had no fireplace. The smaller room just seemed tight. The upgrade cost us $40 extra a night, but it was worth it.
The room was cleaned and stocked when we arrived. We had an upstairs corner room, as I made sure to have those with 2 little ones. I don't want my kids to annoy any neighbors with their loud play. The bathroom was also spacious and provided a separate shower and tub.
The hotel grounds were clean and easy to walk... parking was an additional $15 a night, but its convenient.
I didn't try the onsite restaurant, Esteban, or the spa services/pool either. We were there for the New Year's Eve festivities and to tour beautiful Monterey. All in all, we enjoyed our stay there and would definitely stay there again.
Sardine Factory owners now run the oldest hotel in Monterey. No need to worry as the whole property, the largest acerage, has been totally renovated.
Quiet, spacious rooms in the heart of Monterey.
Marilyn Monroe stayed in the first room to the left as you enter. She was featured in a film, filmed on Cannery Row in 1952.
An eternal flame greets guests in the courtyard. Security is assured with a night watchman.
Casa Munras has done a wonderful job of updating the property and keeping things modern and in line with the Spanish colonial styles in the region. The rooms were neat and clean and well maintained. I selected a king sized bed in a room with a fireplace and discounted breakfast via the on-line reservation system. We ended up in a lovely 2nd floor, corner room that was spacious and comfortable and romantic. The bed was a little soft for me, but after a day of walking around the aquarium and though all the stores at Cannery Row, I slept just fine. The fireplace puts out some heat and we were toasty in no time.
We had dinner both evenings at the restaurant on site, Esteban. Breakfast you can order and pick up and take back to your room or eat at the restaurant. You pay for parking but its a very reasonable rate. There are a couple of "house cats" on the property so if you are sitting in front of the firepit just off the restaurant and see a lovely tuxedo cat, they are just making sure you are having a good time. Didn't get to try the Spa out this time....but we will be next time (already booked our weekend trip for next year).
Check in was simple and front desk was pleasant. The bathroom had a cleanliness issue and upon reporting it we were moved immediately to a new room, with the clerk coming to our room to help us move our belongings. The original room seemed very small for us and our Great Dane, which we reported at time of check in. The new room was a corner room with a lot more space. It had a mini fridge and a single-serve coffee maker. The bathroom is generous size with marble floor and counter top. This hotel does not offer breakfast, however it does have a restaurant on-site. For the budget minded traveler, there is a Denny’s directly across the street. The location is central to visit the bay and all surrounding areas. Historic downtown and the wharf are all walkable from the hotel. It is also near Del Monte shopping center with many eating choices. Parking areas are a bit tight to drive through.
