European romance and seasonal Cali fare in picture-perfect Carmel-by-the-Sea

The Lowdown

Carmel-by-the-Sea feels like one big leafy neighborhood filled with gorgeous European cottages. But L’Auberge stands out even among this company. Formerly an apartment building for artists, the three-story stucco inn maintains that bohemian vibe by reflecting Carmel’s artist colony past. Think black-and-white Helmut Horn photographs, individually designed guest rooms, and vintage touches such as real door keys and French windows. Each of the 20 guest rooms have mahogany beds with down comforters and jewel-tone linens and such tech perks as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. We love the indulgent bathrooms with their heated travertine floors, custom spa-style products and soaking tubs. Homey touches include nightly turn-down with fresh-baked cookies. The cozy 12-table restaurant, Aubergine, and its 4,500-bottle cellar are the stars of the show. Award-winning executive chef Justin Cogley oversees the innovative seasonal tasting menu. In true Left Coast style, local farmers bring their goods straight into the kitchen every day. Breakfast can be served in your room, but it’s most pleasant in the enclosed brick courtyard, which is warmed by heat lamps on chilly mornings. The hotel also offers in-room spa treatments.

In the Area

Visit Aubergine’s sister restaurant, Cantinetta Luca, known for its homemade pasta and equally stellar wine list. It’s within walking distance of the hotel, on Dolores Street between Ocean and 7th. From Carmel, the natural progression is to take the famous Highway 1 down the coast through Big Sur. Or consider taking the scenic 17-Mile Drive on your way to the inn. Carmel Beach City Park is justifiably famous for its scenery, but it can get packed to the gills on a warm day. For smaller crowds try Carmel River State Beach farther south around the promontory, with its rolling dunes and vibrant bird life. Carmel is made for leisurely strolls and shopping, so be sure to take a two-hour guided walk along the hidden pathways past the fairytale homes of the famous with Carmel Walks Tours.

This is a beautiful inn in the heart of Carmel. I stayed here for two nights in October. It was clean, comfortable, and the service was excellent. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was large, new and beautiful.

Breakfast was fantastic and the hotel is located near a slew of coffee shops and restaurants.

I would highly recommend to anyone looking for the top notch hotel in Carmel.

Anniversary Weekend By-the-Sea
Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Carmel-by-the-Sea has been a favorite of ours for many years. For our Anniversary we drove up Coast Hwy 1 and spent two nights as guests of the Auberge Carmel. We stayed in a Courtyard King Bed Suite and enjoyed a rainy weekend of wandering around the lovely small town. The hotel management team and staff are all lovely and accommodating. We will definitely be back again.

Pretty near perfect

What a charming little place! Fantastic location, beautifully decorated and the most welcoming and attentive staff I’ve met in awhile. Place really does make you feel like you’re in the South of France. Love that valet parking and breakfast were included but the $30 in compulsory tips at check in was the only thing that caused a raised eye brow. We would happily return though and if it’s in your budget I’d highly recommend staying here.

a superb holiday experience.....

was given to us by this gracious property. We so enjoyed our moments here, so many thoughtful touches made our holiday special. Each staff member was extremely considerate, thoughtful and helpful. We enjoyed the festive patio area where you could sit for lunch or happy hour. Our room was lovely, we stayed in two , and each one, although difference offered the same high quality in linens, furnishings, bath area and bath amenities. We anticipated our "cookies" each evening, as we did the carefully thought out breakfast in the morning. We found the shuttle very helpful , so we didn't have to deal with finding a parking place. This is a beautiful old building, given the attention and respect due..and.is part of the beauty of Carmel. We could not find fault...yes, it is expensive, but so are many of the properties here, but we felt it was money well spent, and well worth it. Thank you all at L'Auberge for such a memorable stay...we do plan to return!
