Romantic Byzantine retreat surrounded by rolling hills near the fortress village of Monemvasia in southern Greece
Opened in the spring of 2010, Kinsterna is the mainland antidote to the cliché blue-and-white stucco Greek island vacation. Housed in a stunning stone mansion amid rolling hills near the medieval fortress village of Monemvasia, the 27-room retreat is surrounded by thriving olive and fruit groves where guests are encouraged to gather oranges, grapes, figs, pomegranates, quince and mulberries. But don’t mistake this for some kind of work-stay lodge — this five-star hotel throughly pampers its guests. An ancient cistern (kinsterna is an old Greek word for cistern) fed by a freshwater spring flows into the swimming pool, and interiors blend stone, wood and earth tones with Venetian antiques, vaulted ceilings and original fireplaces.
Bed & Bath
Each of the stone-walled bedrooms has been beautifully restored, many with carved wooden beams, authentic fireplaces, verandas looking out over the Aegean Sea and stylish period furnishings, all very rustic-chic. Enormous beds are clad in high-quality white linens, and each room comes with its own pillow menu. Luxurious bathrooms are made from a mixture of cool local marble and slate, and they feature double rain showers, piles of fluffy white towels and heated towel racks.
The Kinsterna Spa, in the mansion’s center, is a calming space that takes its cue from every aspect of the property’s past. A purifying hammam is the centerpiece, but you’ll also find a whirlpool, wet and dry treatment rooms and more, plus a full menu of treatments that use ingredients from the area, including sea minerals, red grapes and seaweed. Flanked by rock walls, open-air fireplaces and large, comfy daybeds, you’ll find young, stylish European honeymooners relaxing around the freshwater swimming pool. The Belvedere Bar is the perfect place to sip a crisp glass of champagne and look out over rolling vistas of vineyard and olive grove, while the restaurant dishes up Greek and Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on products grown right on the estate.
