How to Get There
I took my wife to this hotel for a weekend getaway. The hotel staff was very helpful and informative. We used the complimentary hotel shuttle service to attend Shakespeare in the Park and was quite impressed with the accommodations of the hotel. Our issue occurred in the middle of the night however. The night clerk had given a man with a similar name the key to our room . Thankfully we had the door locked and secured before going to bed so he was not able to enter the room. The opening of the door and the sound the door makes as it hits the security bar not only woke my wife from a dead sleep, but also scared her to the point of wanting to leave immediately. When she called the front desk the night clerk said that he had given the key to her husband who just arrived. My wife informed the clerk that I was already in the room and that the key was given to someone else. The clerk was very apologetic and re-issued a new key to our door so that the stranger did not still have a key to the door. It was very difficult to fall back asleep after being awaken by this debacle. Looking back, if I had not had the security bar latched on the door, I'm not sure how the situation would have ended. We did get an email from the hotel offering a discount on another stay, but I'm not sure I can get my wife to agree to it.
I unexpectedly stayed in KC for a couple of days past my originally planned trip, and needed to find a hotel in a pinch. I pulled up the options near the Plaza and went for The Fontaine.
The unexpected stay was not a welcome one (issues at the airport), but the staff at the front desk was so kind and welcoming. I had hoped for a room with a large bed, but ended up with one with two doubles...which is all they had available. However, it ended up working out great. My suitcase loved having its own spot on bed 1 and I slept really well on the other. The mattress was top notch, and the pillows were also great. I take pillows very seriously.
I had a view of the plaza, was able to work on their free wifi from the desk in my room. Up on the 7th floor, I enjoyed drinks at the bar each night with the lovely company of Mary Anne who was tending bar. There was a small jazz quartet on Tuesday evening, a welcome bit of ambiance early in the week. It was freezing out, so I couldn't take in the rooftop bar or pool, but it looked lovely.
The Parker restaurant was bought out on my first night, and abuzz with conference attendees on the second evening. Had their burger at the bar and it was excellent.
All in all, what was a harrowing start to two days "stuck" in Kansas City was really brightened by my stay at The Fontaine. I will be back!
This was my second stay at The Fontaine Hotel. The first stay was in December of 2015.
The difference from that stay and this one in December 2018 was very disappointing.
We booked a suite for this stay because we were in town for business for over a week.
The room was in very poor condition. The carpet was so filthy our socks were black. The room and bathroom were not very clean. The bathroom fan was clogged with dust, as were the air ducts.
We had no hot water in one of the bathroom sinks. We reported the problem and they sent someone to look at it. He did not rectify the problem nor did he ever return.
I have the average rating due to excellent customer service from the hotel and restaurant staff. Although the restaurant food was inconsistent the servers were friendly and attentive.
It’s a shame that the hotel has deteriorated so much in three years.
I stayed here with my husband while he was wrapping up some business, and boy was I blown away. Tucked into a side street, the entrance was a little hidden away, which made it hard to find at first, but seemed to also keep it quiet. The staff was always courteous and very helpful. The rooms and the entire place was very modern and beautifully decorated. Came across as quite luxurious. Would highly recommend!
This is a gorgeous hotel with lots of attention to design and elegance. It is reasonably priced for the location too. Highlights are a large shower in the bathroom, a convenient walking distance to the plaza and a free car service within a five mile radius. The staff was also pleasant and helpful. It does cost to park and the mini bar is expansive. The queen sized beds also feel more like full sized. However, it is otherwise a great pick!
