Sleek design hotel with solid eco credentials, conveniently located opposite Milan Centrale station
In a city synonymous with fashion, the design-led Milan Starhotels Echo fits right in. Its sleek, business-like demeanor conceals an unexpected warmth, from the lobby's bed-size sofas to its floor-to-ceiling photographs of blooming Tuscan gardens. Ironwork silhouettes of birds are scattered throughout, and the mood is more pleasure than business, although about half of the weekday clientele are in sharp Italian suits. What’s more, rooms are of a decent size—a rarity in this high-priced, space-cramped city. Stone floors made to look like parquet keep the tone warm but feet cool on hot Italian days, while slate-gray angular sofas and cream walls with a soft-focus floral motif exude a design-hotel vibe rather than a stuffy business feel. Orto Restaurant Green Food & Mood by Eataly features a huge mural on one side of the bright, airy room which changes scenes throughout the day, adding a whimsical mood to the smart-casual eatery. Breakfast is billed as "American buffet," which means you'll wake up to tables heaped with pastries, eggs, and fruit instead of the usual Italian offering of a lonely bread roll and espresso. Dinner is surprisingly good, with some excellent vegetarian options but plenty for carnivores, so you won’t feel you’re missing out if you decide not to venture beyond the hotel. While the top-floor gym is minuscule, it’s worth hitting the treadmill for the stellar views over Milan’s rooftops. Another perk: the hotel joins in the Milanese aperitivo tradition by offering hefty pre-dinner canapés—olive paté on bruschetta, Parma ham wrapped around melon and the like —for the price of a drink at the bar.
In the Area
The best of the city is a short Metro ride from the hotel, but you can walk to popular nightclub Q21, and you’ll want to take a good look around Milano Centrale station and its 1930s architecture. The city’s must-not-miss sight is the Duomo, a vast marble cathedral. It was built between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the stairs to the roof are worth it for up-close views of statues, pinnacles and spires, plus the rest of the city spreading out all around. To get your fill of Armani, Gucci and other designers, hit the Quadrilatero d'Oro area.
