With two golf courses, two pools, even a lazy river ride, this vast Aventura resort is a city unto itself
It’s a 25-minute drive from South Beach, but there are plenty of amusements right on-site at this vast resort, with two pools (the scenic, heated Cascata has a rushing waterfall, and the family-friendly Laguna boasts a water slide and lazy river ride.)Once guests have worked up an appetite, they can pull up a chair at the poolside Laguna Grill or Latin-inflected Cascata Grill, or get away from the sun at Bourbon Steak, helmed by famed chef Michael Mina.
In the Area
Once a guest leaves the resort, they have three choices: shopping at the Aventura Mall, hitting the beach (the resort’s private beach club is in nearby Sunny Isles, but there’s also South Beach in Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale Beach), or exploring one of the cities within a short drive. That might mean heading to Miami’s artsy Wynwood neighborhood or Fort Lauderdale’s bustling Las Olas Boulevard. And if those destinations don’t prove wild enough, there’s always a private eco-tour of the Everglades.
How to Get There
First, let me state this is a beautiful property and will be a fabulous place to stay when all the work is completed. I wish the work to have been completed (as promised) before the conference I attended there was actually finished. Many colleagues were staying in rooms that were not truly ready for occupancy, e.g. outlets not working, construction materials left in rooms (staples and nails strewn about on the floor), construction noise that began too early in the morning. The hotel also seem understaffed for the amount of people staying there. I believe there were at least 2 large conferences going on at the same time. Pool service and room service were unbelievably slow. I hope all these wrinkles are worked out when the work on the property is complete or it will continue to be a less than stellar experience for a JW Marriott property.
The JW Marriott Turnberry is a very large, sprawling complex that hosts both leisure guests looking for the resort experience - spa, pool, golf, tennis, etc plus corporate and group meetings. If you are going as a leisure guest, if there is a large meeting in house at the time, be prepared for a very busy crowded hotel. I had a room in one of the new sections of the hotel. The room was large, well furnished and comfortable, albeit generic in design. The bathroom was large with a separate toilet closet and large walk in shower. My room had a balcony which unfortunately overlooked the roof of the lobby and other parts of the hotel. The pool was only OK, surrounded on all sides by hotel buildings and therefore partially in shade depending upon the position of the sun.
This hotel is impressive. The staff is over the top helpful and friendly. We stayed in the new Orchid Tower. There was a View of the golf course and ocean from our balcony. The rooms are top notch with extremely comfortable beds and pillows. White marble bathrooms with excellent lighting. Definitely would go back!
Big lifetime fan of Marriott. Many of the recent changes at Turnberry are improvements. But at check-in I was told that I was given a “resort view room.” Thought it was an upgrade, but the view was the top of the roofs with air conditioning fans and duct work (see photo). No big deal to me but others were quite put out. Still a good stay. Staff was great and the room was both elegant and comfortable.
Stayed at the JW Marriott Turnberry and our stay was impressive. Check-in was efficient, and the room was available upon our arrival -- and everyone always appreciates that. The room was very comfortable as the bathroom/shower was very impressive. Everyone and I mean everyone was very polite and friendly, which always makes a out of town stay more enjoyable.
