South Beach sophisticate in an Art Deco icon with mesmerizing ocean views, a mezzanine pool and destination restaurant

The Look

The Tides has long been considered one of Art Deco architect L. Murray Dixon’s true masterpieces. And a 2008 overhaul by star designer Kelly Wearstler elevated the interiors to high art. In lieu of the oft crass SoBe glitz, you’ll find a sophisticated mix of oversized driftwood sculptures atop Deco credenzas and custom leather chesterfields fronting brass nautical tables. The textures are luxe but the palette is an understated homage to the sugary sand out front.

Bed & Bath

The hotel’s 45 spacious suites, all with ocean views, feel more like beachfront apartments than hotel rooms thanks to large walk-in closets and comfortable living spaces. The monochrome sand-inspired colors let the rich textures shine, from desks that resemble braided shells to overstuffed leather armchairs and petrified wood side tables. Frette linens and Vrai bath products add to the mellow spa-like vibe.

The dinner menu at the Tides Restaurant & Bar offers South Beach takes on bistro fare and excellent seafood picks like grilled salmon with lemon caper Israeli couscous and fruit salsa or Chilean sea bass with lemongrass coconut ginger broth and rice noodles. Although there’s an elegant, white-tablecloth dining room, the best place to eat is on the tiered perch overlooking the Ocean Drive action. Unlike many hotels on this strip, the Tides has a pool, and the two cabanas at each end are the most prized seats, worth snagging early in the day. The hotel also has free towels and chairs for guests across the street on the beach.

In the Area

One of the best ways to see South Beach is to take the beachfront path from South Pointe Park all the way to the top of the boardwalk, in the 4600 block of Collins Ave. Prefer to pedal? Rent a DecoBike from a kiosk. Inspired by your Deco digs? Take an architecture walking tour by the Miami Design Preservation League. Tours leave daily from the park across from the hotel. Then browse the edgy home décor over in Miami’s Design District. Or stay local with a visit to fashion icon The Webster, Miami’s answer to Colette, a short stroll away.

My yearly destination to relax
Reviewed 9 months ago

One of my all time favorite hotels, this all ocean view hotel is quite, stylish and relaxing.

I always prefer to go on off weekends rather than loud Miami, however this hotel always seems to be tranquil.

Each room feels comfortable and stylish and the staff is always accommodating.

The pool and cabanas seem to belong to only you while there.

It's not inexpensive, but each year I like to treat myself to this and it's always worth it.

The Tides is nicely located on the beachfront strip with lots of cafes and restaurants nearby.
The rooms are comfortable but basic and the staff are friendly and very helpful. We would stay at Tides again and would recommend this property.

Memorable meal

A stunning meal, impeccable service, magnificent surroundings. The staff were very friendly and extremely courteous. Lobster special cooked to perfection, rack of lamb succulent and the fish stew was delicious. Thoroughly recommend to anyone looking that memorable meal.

Superb Location, Pristine Hotel
Reviewed 2 years ago

From the moment we pulled up on Ocean Drive, this hotel was immaculate. The lobby, check in area, elevator and our room. Absolutely pristine. The location could not have been better, as there are some areas on South Beach that are a little too noisy for my liking. My daughter and I ate both Dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Both meals being fantastic. The outdoor dining was so much fun, as was the people watching. The staff was always accommodating and super kind. We reside in Naples, Florida and are no strangers to luxury, so this hotel fit our lifestyle PERFECTLY. We were very impressed!

Demetrius is a honest hard worker who does all he has to do to make you comfortable. Thank you D for taking care of us and keeping a beautiful smile on your face while doing it! Demetrius went above. I went to go reposition the umbrella to accommodate the shading i wanted, when he saw that, he immediately took over and helped me out. He made great small and later discovered it was my birthday. Without knowing he went above and beyond. He made my birthday on the beach enjoyable! Your vibrant smile lights this place up! Thank you for everything!
