An eco-friendly oceanfront sanctuary in the heart of Miami Beach with a pool, spa and restaurant

The Look

Built in 1939 by renowned Art Deco architect Roy France, the 251-room Palms Hotel and Spa is an eco-friendly oasis that brings a Caribbean-vibe to the sands of Miami Beach. In 2009 the hotel underwent a full renovation, joined the Preferred Hotel & Resorts Group and saw the addition of the award-winning Essensia Restaurant and Lounge. The 3,000-square-foot lobby showcases high ceilings and grand columns, and has a safari vibe. Out back, the hotel is a quiet hideaway that spills out onto a stretch of soft ocean sand, highlighted by a jogging boardwalk that extends to trendy South Beach — just one mile away.

Bed and Bath

Spanning 12 floors, the guestrooms overlook the Miami cityscape, the Atlantic Ocean or the tropical garden and pool area, which overflows with bamboo, palm trees, orchids and two colorful parrots. The rooms and suites are done in calming sand-and-sea earth tones and are fitted with mod cons such as flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, plush bathrobes and fully stocked minibars. With Sealy Posturepedic pillowtop mattresses, down comforters and Egyptian cotton sheets, the beds are so soft you feel as if you’re melting right into them. Showers and toilets are completely separate; they feature rainfall showers, mosaic glass tilework and Aveda bath products.

The Essensia Restaurant’s crescent shape and its lotus flower chandeliers give the space an exotic feel, while the seasonal menu uses locally grown ingredients, including some from chef Venoy Rogers III’s garden. The outdoor seating on the shaded patio is the perfect place to sip a specialty cocktail or discover an under-the-radar microbrew. There’s a tiki bar that serves drinks to those lounging by the heated pool or in one of the shaded hammocks. Private cabanas serve as additional treatment rooms for the 5,000-square-foot Aveda spa, and beverages, umbrellas and towel service are provided to guests relaxing on the beach.

In the Area

South Beach’s electrifying nightlife is just a few blocks from the hotel, and clubs like Set and Liv heat things up late into the night. For a taste of Latin culture, Mangos is the place to be on the weekends for dinner and dance shows, while Española Way offers salsa lessons. At the nearby Miami Beach Marina, scuba diving, boat rentals and deep sea fishing are offered. A short drive to the south, adventure seekers can soar like birds with Hang Glide Miami, a unique boat-towed hang-gliding operation that grants stunning views of the city. History and architecture lovers can admire the Renaissance-style Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and the Miami Design District is home to numerous art galleries and high fashion emporia.

Ok hotel in a good location, horrible service
Reviewed 5 days ago

The hotel itself fine. Location is accessible to pretty much everything, with cab rides only being 10 minutes away to Lincoln Road and other restaurants. The pool was nice but nothing amazing.

I'm downgrading based on the service.

We checked in on a Friday morning. I expected the room not to be ready based on our early check-in, so that was fine. I was told they would text me when the room was ready. Cut to 5 hours later and still no word. I finally go back to the front desk and they tell me the room's been ready for a while. So we make our way up to the room and our luggage isn't there. So I have to go back downstairs to ask about it, but was told they couldn't give it to me since I didn't have the ticket on me since I had left them in my shorts upstairs when we changed to go swimming while we waited for the room. Just not at all accommodating.

I also asked if they could remove the alcohol from the fridge so we could store water and milk for our kids. It took a couple of calls but someone finally did. When we checked out, I made it clear to the front desk that we did not use anything in the fridge, they removed items based on our request, but we should not be charged for it. They confirmed I wouldn't be.

Cut to 2 days later and I check my credit card bill, and what do you know, I see a charge for $200. I call the hotel and ask to speak to their billing department and was immediately hung up on. I eventually got in touch with billing and got the amount refunded but it should have never been charged to begin with, and they were relying on my incompetency to not check.

I will definitely be staying elsewhere on our next visit, as while the amenities were fine, the service was poor.

Wonderful place to stay

I stayed for two nights with my family in a Standard family room and the room was very clean and neat. Though I had breakfast included in my booking there is a Subway and a few cafes are nearby. A supermarket and a gift shop are also nearby.
Breakfast in the hotel restaurant is really good. However, the lady in the restaurant reception is not so welcoming compared to other staff. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Especially the front desk staff is so helpful and kind. If you want to check out and stay for another few hours, they will keep your luggage secure and still use pool and beach or just stay in the lounge.

Amazing stay

Please can we come back?! The Palms Hotel and Spa is a fantastic hotel.
Beautiful grounds, immaculate hotel and amazing service. We loved hanging out at the beach and also around the pool. The cocktails are delicious and far too tempting but when you’re on holiday, who cares right!
We had an ocean view room and we couldn’t get enough of the beautiful view.
We would love to visit again sometime. Thanks for a great stay.

we have been coming to the palms hotel and spa for eight years. we travel and when it comes to where to stay in miami beach, there is never a second choice. we know what staying in a hotel can mean regarding service and cleanliness and friendliness and just plain good feeling all around. this is what you get at this hotel. we just returned and had to make certain to once again tell the front desk (nastasia) who makes everything top notch for us how we are so thrilled that the excellent of service remains year after year. we feel like royalty and we already planning to return. i can go on and on. my best thing to say is that entering the hotel you already know that you are on "vacation".

My Favorite Hotel Ever

My family first discovered this hotel while attending Parent’s Weekend at UMiami 2001 and fell in love with the coziness of this hotel. Every chance we get, this is our hotel of choice when in town. Our daughter recently got married in Key West and my husband and I had to spend a couple of days here to relax before the big event. Friendly, professional staff with everything you need to enjoy either the lush pool environment or cozy beach chair service. Very nice place to enjoy a glass of wine with lunch by the pool. Great beach towels. Did I mention the ocean view or privacy of the hotel compound? Or the parrots? It has been remodeled or redecorated several times over these years. Especially nice is the healthy, green environment.
