Built in 1939 by renowned Art Deco architect Roy France, the 251-room Palms Hotel and Spa is an eco-friendly oasis that brings a Caribbean-vibe to the sands of Miami Beach. In 2009 the hotel underwent a full renovation, joined the Preferred Hotel & Resorts Group and saw the addition of the award-winning Essensia Restaurant and Lounge. The 3,000-square-foot lobby showcases high ceilings and grand columns, and has a safari vibe. Out back, the hotel is a quiet hideaway that spills out onto a stretch of soft ocean sand, highlighted by a jogging boardwalk that extends to trendy South Beach — just one mile away.
Bed and Bath
Spanning 12 floors, the guestrooms overlook the Miami cityscape, the Atlantic Ocean or the tropical garden and pool area, which overflows with bamboo, palm trees, orchids and two colorful parrots. The rooms and suites are done in calming sand-and-sea earth tones and are fitted with mod cons such as flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, plush bathrobes and fully stocked minibars. With Sealy Posturepedic pillowtop mattresses, down comforters and Egyptian cotton sheets, the beds are so soft you feel as if you’re melting right into them. Showers and toilets are completely separate; they feature rainfall showers, mosaic glass tilework and Aveda bath products.
The Essensia Restaurant’s crescent shape and its lotus flower chandeliers give the space an exotic feel, while the seasonal menu uses locally grown ingredients, including some from chef Venoy Rogers III’s garden. The outdoor seating on the shaded patio is the perfect place to sip a specialty cocktail or discover an under-the-radar microbrew. There’s a tiki bar that serves drinks to those lounging by the heated pool or in one of the shaded hammocks. Private cabanas serve as additional treatment rooms for the 5,000-square-foot Aveda spa, and beverages, umbrellas and towel service are provided to guests relaxing on the beach.
In the Area
South Beach’s electrifying nightlife is just a few blocks from the hotel, and clubs like Set and Liv heat things up late into the night. For a taste of Latin culture, Mangos is the place to be on the weekends for dinner and dance shows, while Española Way offers salsa lessons. At the nearby Miami Beach Marina, scuba diving, boat rentals and deep sea fishing are offered. A short drive to the south, adventure seekers can soar like birds with Hang Glide Miami, a unique boat-towed hang-gliding operation that grants stunning views of the city. History and architecture lovers can admire the Renaissance-style Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and the Miami Design District is home to numerous art galleries and high fashion emporia.
How to Get There
Well located, not too far away from South Beach and LincolnRoad, very easy to get to the airport, whether it is taxi, Uber, Lift or bus. Simple pool and nice beach. The hotel is comfortable, rooms are not very spacious, but totally ok. When you have the chance to be in the 8th, 9th 10th and 11th flloor ocean view, you could spend the whole day in the hotel room watching the unique wonderful view to the ocean. Did not try the breakfast buffet, so I could not say anything about that. The bar is ok. The bellman are adorable.
I haven’t written a review for a hotel in a while but this place is a gem on the oceanfront in mid Miami Beach. We arrived at 8:45am. Had full use of the beach and pool and they gave us our Oceanfront room before 12pm since we got in so early. Room was very modernly decorated. Shower and toilets are in 2 separate rooms across each other and both have sinks. Garden area was nice for relaxing in the evening. Beach chairs and umbrellas are complimentary on the beachfront. Pool was nice though the pool area became crowded quickly but this could have been due to a wedding that was being held there. All in all great 1 day/1night stay after a weeklong cruise. Would have loved to have stayed here as part of a weekend getaway!
We stayed at The Palms for my husband’s birthday. Not only did they graciously upgrade our room, but they left a bottle of wine as a gift! From the bellhops to the waiters to the housekeepers, everyone’s service was phenomenal! The photos on the website are real photos. Our view of the pool area and the ocean was just spectacular! Even if you don’t get a room with an ocean-front view, you have access to the beautiful pool and the hotel’s own private area on the beach. We will definitely return!
