How to Get There
My wife and I recently spent 4 nights at this hotel. First impressions were mixed. Our taxi driver knew the location of the hotel but when we arrived we didn't know where it was as the hotel does not have its name displayed on the exterior - an error methinks. Anyway, once past that things improved dramatically. After being welcomed warmly and a very swift check-in procedure we collected our keys and discovered that we had been allocated an utterly charming room on the first floor - attractively decorated, very well appointed and very spacious for South Beach. The whole hotel had a 'cool' theme, with very young/friendly staff and a laid back atmosphere albeit with very good service. The hotel is very small, only 18 rooms, but it still has a (small) rooftop terrace/splash pool and offers 'complimentary' (actually you pay for it via the 'resort fee') beach chairs and umbrellas). The beach is very close and easily accessible. The hotel is situated in a very nice, quiet, residential part of South Beach away from the main partying area, but close enough to it if you really want to party. The complimentary glass of good quality wine offered by the hotel each evening was a nice touch and most welcome. There are several good restaurants within an easy walk. We used the hotel restaurant only once, for breakfast, but wishes we had gone there more often. The menu is eclectic and interesting. I tried the quinoa and avocado with picked cherries which was delicious. Service was good and the prices OK for food in South Beach. The room rate was also good for South Beach (expensive otherwise). We had a couple of problems with our room but only one of them was fixed relatively promptly - the broken patio sliding door handle remaining broken when we checked out which was a little disappointing. However, overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book a room at the Sense Beach House.in the future.
Stayed here for two nights in March and absolutely loved the place, such beautiful decor, we were smitten as soon as we walked in.
The highlight is the rooftop area, which has a small pool, great views of Miami and lots of comfy places to sit. There's also a phone to ring down and order food/drinks which is very useful, however a menu by the phone would have made this better since we still had to go downstairs to see what's on offer.
The room was spacious (HUGE bathroom) and perfectly clean. Only complaint here was that there's not tea or coffee making facilities in the room! There's an iron, hair dryer, fluffy robes..... But no kettle! However the enormous, comfy bed almost made up for this (I'm English though so not quite!)
The restaurant area is also beautiful inside and out. Overpriced, however this is South Beach so pretty much everywhere is! Staff were mostly very friendly and the food was good. Free glass of wine between 5-6 as well which was great! Lovely place to sit for a quiet early evening drink before hitting the strip.
Overall a wonderful place to stay - about a minute from the beach and a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of all the bars on South Beach, but just slightly removed so it's lovely and quiet and feels like a proper escape. If we come back to Miami we would definitely choose Sense Beach House again :)
My fiancé and I really did enjoy our time at this hotel, however, there was an issue after booking and another issue upon check in.
I booked this hotel on Expedia and picked it partly due to the fact that it said full payment would be taken after our stay. A couple months after I booked, a charge showed up on my credit card. I contacted Expedia and they couldn’t tell me why so I contacted sense beach house through their messaging system. I was told that they had charged the first night as a deposit. No where on their Expedia listing did it state this would happen so naturally I was a little shocked and upset. Their response was basically ‘well this is how it is and you’re welcome to cancel’. No apologies, and they even argued that their listing had this policy on it. I wouldn’t even doubt If they never looked into that issue. I would have cancelled, based off the clear lack of care that their policies were listed incorrectly on Expedia, had I been able to find something suitable for a similar price. I didn’t, and hoped that there would not be any further issues, but unfortunately that was not the case...
Upon check in the front desk girl had to leave for a few minutes and came back to tell us our room was overbooked so we’d be put in a room with 2 beds instead of 1 king bed and would have to move rooms the next day. She didn’t say sorry once, and clearly did not care that this had happened. If that was me, I would have been mortified. How do you overbook a room that was booked 8 months prior? Her response was “just a system error.” My guess is this is a fairly regular occurrence as she seemed completely un-phased by telling us this had happened. She even told us the replacement room was bigger, which was so not true. The room I actually booked was the exact same size, and even had a second patio off the bathroom. She offered to comp the $12 resort fee for that night and buy us 2 cocktails. Just based off the girl’s crappy attitude I asked to speak to the manager. She was much better and apologized and offered to comp a full meal for 2 as well as the cocktails. This I was happy with and the meal was great. The rooms ended up being next to each other so the move was quick, but annoying to have to pack up and move, nonetheless.
Other than those 2 bad experiences, the hotel itself was physically nice. Close to the beach and they had towels and chairs you could take. Many restaurants just a walk away. Nice rooftop pool, albeit small. The rooftop lounge area was very nice. They had fruit infused water by the elevator each day and offered a free glass of wine between 6-7 each night. The decor was nice and the hotel was very clean. The sheets were not very nice though— very plastic feeling. You can also hear everything in the hallways. The first morning we were woken up to the cleaning ladies having a 30min loud girl chat. The last morning we were woken up to some sort of work being done.
This hotel is far from perfect, I would be nervous to book again due to the overbooking issue... not sure what they would have done if they didn’t have an extra room. Actually surprised they even did as it was the weekend of Miami music week. We were happy with the price given the location. Very unhappy with check in and the attitude of that staff member, but the manager did make up for it with the meal she comped for us. I would probably book with another boutique hotel nearby next time. There seemed to be lots in the area.
Lovely room, quiet and comfortable with large bathroom. Only complaint is there are no coffee making facilities in the room and the cafe/restaurant downstairs doesn't open until 8am so if you're an early riser who needs caffeine when you open your eyes, you have to get dressed and walk to the gelato shop down the street and pay about $4 a cup for a takeaway which adds up pretty quickly. Rooftop pool is a nice bonus with a few sun loungers and seating area. Would stay again but probably pack a travel kettle ! On the plus side, they offer a free glass of wine in the early evening which is nice when you get back from your activities and it's lovely wine too.
Sense Beach House is a small boutique establishment. It only has 18 guest rooms in total 9 on level two and 9 on level 3. We stopped here for 4 nights on our way back to Australia. The staff are young and friendly. The rooms are bright and breezy and very clean although we had room no 9 on level two which is above the receiving area so each time there was a delivery we heard the roller door like we were standing in the loading dock!
When the guests in the room directly above went to the bathroom the water going through the pipes was like a freight train! As we were in transit we did not take into account that it was 'Spring Break" in Miami so it was overrun by students and loud cars. (showing my age) partying well into the early hours. Sense is far enough away from the action so not so much noise from outside. We didn't get to dine here as it was consistently booked out so the food must be good! It has a lovely small restaurant with some outside dining and a nice bar.
Check the photos on the web as it's exactly as is. The Pool is small and there are no staff at the "Pool Bar" There is a phone though where you call down for a drink (if you require one).
The beach is literally a 2 minute walk and the hotel will supply you with chair's umbrella and towels. Shopping is one block away. There is a large Walgreens supermarket on 5th were you can pick up almost anything!
I think this hotel is more suited to a younger demographic and therefore I would recommend it, but for the more mature travellers (me) I would choose somewhere else. All in all though it was a pleasant stay.
