Designed in the 1950s by illustrious architect Morris Lapidus (known for his eye-catching neo-Baroque Miami buildings), this South Beach icon has been totally reinvented for the 21st century by ultrahip SIXTY Hotels. The style falls somewhere between nautical-inspired breezy beach house and glamorous residential crash pad; the 250 airy guestrooms feature a soothing neutral palette and custom artworks from cult photographer Sante D’Orazio, along with luxe textures like white marble floors, sisal rugs and studded leather wingback chairs. Flashes of design brilliance abound, like vintage steamer trunk–inspired minibars that evoke the golden age of travel. The head-turning lobby, a hub for Miami’s abundant beautiful people, features tufted gray linen sofas and metallic orange leather chairs, while outdoors, guests can preen by the heated saltwater pool, which features an underwater sound system, private cabanas, a pool bar and a lawn leading down to the beach. Helmed by celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli, the Driftwood Room is a white-hot addition to the South Beach dining scene, with its Mediterranean and Floridian-accented fare and buzzy outdoor terrace spanning 1,950 square feet.

Sure, you could blow some serious cash at any of the swanky high-end bars and restaurants lining South Beach, but why not explore the city’s cheap-and-cheerful side instead? Start at the South Beach outpost of My Ceviche, a fun cevicheria from Miami hospitality fixtures Sam Gorenstein and Roger Duarte that serves top-notch wild seafood, bright zingy salads and tacos using free-range meat. Need to eat something to soak up those adult beverages you consumed poolside? Get thee to La Sandwicherie, a Miami Beach go-to for sandwiches both All-American (the Terminator features three different kinds of meat, plus provolone) and Euro-influenced (croques every which way.) If you’re feeling in more of a Latin mood, hop over to El Mago de las Fritas for some authentic Cuban sandwiches or fritas, Cuban-style hamburgers loaded with delicious calories galore. Or, if you’re feeling posh but don’t want to spend a lot of dosh, slurp freshly shucked oysters at the River Oyster Bar; at the daily happy hour (4:30 to 7 p.m.) you can snare a dozen oysters for less than 20 bucks.
