A boutique hotel with historic bones and a playful personality at the posh southern tip of South Beach
High meets low, past meets present, and U.K. meets U.S. This Deco building preserves its original terrazzo floors and ornate elevator doors, but upstairs you’ll find edgy design details such as wall-size murals of tatted-out models, silver tree stump side tables and cowhide modernist chairs. Then there are the irreverent nods to the hotel’s namesake, Arthur Balfour, prime minister of the U.K. in the early 20th century. The coffee table in one suite bears a plaque that says “Please keep your feet on the table.” Quotes from Balfour adorn the ceiling leading to the front desk, and a mirrored piece by the bar references both his vanity and Miami’s as well.
Bed & Bath
The 64 guestrooms are on the small side (two suites have an additional living area), but they provide plenty of perks to make up for it: 40-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, and impossibly soft bed linens. In the bathrooms you’ll find rainfall showers, custom Room Mate bath products and quirky touches including soap holders in the shape of an upturned hand.
The hotel has a leafy courtyard, a lovely lobby space for continental breakfast and a shaded terrace and bar that serves tea-blended cocktails. Order the Lord Balfour Collins, a gin-based drink with oolong tea reduction, yuzu, basil and chilled club soda. Head to the concierge desk — an antique telephone exchange console — to find out how the hotel can help you arrange a food tour of Miami or a private art or fashion consultation. And if you want to hit the beach, it's just a two-minute stroll away.
In the Area
Other than the beach, you mean? SoFi is one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods in Miami Beach, but it also happens to be one of the most laid-back and quiet, offering a respite from the whoomp-whoomp of the touristy stretch of Ocean Drive. Rent a DecoBike from one of the nearby kiosks and explore the Art Deco district and picturesque South Pointe Park. SoFi is where you’ll find Joe’s Stone Crab, a local institution, and Prime One Twelve, a steakhouse as famous for its power crowd as for its $50 steaks. Nikki Beach is here, if you want to party the day away, or, for a more serene scene, try Smith & Wollensky, which overlooks Government Cut Channel (where cruise ships sail out into the Atlantic); it’s one of the most picturesque cocktail spots in town.
