A clean and sleek new Miami base just north of colorful South Beach, boasting retro-modern interiors
Retro style gets a modern makeover at The Gates Hotel South Beach. Within this cheerful base, a Doubletree by Hilton property, it’s all pinks, aquas and navy blues, arranged in abstract artworks and bold prints, alongside crisp whites. The Continental restaurant has its own updated mid-century vibe and serves refreshing cocktails and all-day eats beside the street, complementing the offerings in the lobby. In your room, enjoy contemporary conveniences like an mp3 alarm clock and 42-in. HDTV.
Keep with the old-meets-new theme as you step out and turn onto Collins Avenue, one of the most famous thoroughfares in the nation. Here, you’ll find dozens of Art Deco landmarks, plus a hip 21st-century scene: cutting-edge restaurants, crowded dance clubs, new sushi joints and shops with the latest in bikini styles. And if you want something that pairs perfectly with throwback glamour and present-day flair alike, simply head to the beach – just the next block over.
Each and every room shows off updated retro style, with light woods, colorful artworks and walls of white. Slip between the the crisp sheets of your plush bed, and browse your 42-in. HDTV’s channels. If you need to print something, simply log into the hotel’s Wi-Fi network and send it to the printer wirelessly.
The Continental is relatively new but already a bit of a Mid-Beach icon, its red lettering popping against the baby-blue Miami skies above Collins Avenue. Its food and drinks share the décor’s fun, fresh flair, from the avocado-salsa fresca omelette with lime cream and cotija to the cheesesteak egg rolls (it is, after all, a Philly export). Cocktails are served here – we recommend the peach-vodka-and-Tang Astronaut – and in the lobby.
In Mid-Beach, things are a little quieter than on next-door South Beach, but make no mistake – this is one of the coolest, if not the coolest, Miami neighborhood right now. Nearby are other fabulous dining options, like cocktails at hip The Freehand’s James Beard Award-nominated bar and Sunday brunch at SoHo Beach House’s Cecconi’s, and for swimming and sunbathing, the Atlantic is just one block over. Set aside an hour or two to take a memorable stroll, mouth agape, through the unbelievably decadent Faena District.
