Trendy urban crash pad inspired by Aussie artist Adam Cullen, with a rooftop deck and dumpling bar
A red carpet emblazoned with the words “Living Fearlessly” leads to the glass doors of The Cullen, a lime- and black-colored hotel in Melbourne’s Prahran neighborhood. Inside, lifesize sculptures of cows mingle in a white reception area dotted with bold canvases depicting pained humans and animals, recurring motifs in Aussie artist Adam Cullen’s controversial work. Dripping paint cans filled with vivid red flora also command attention.
Bed and Bath
Cullen’s bright paintings adorn the white walls of the self-contained suites. The heavy black lines prominent in his work are accentuated by black curtains, carpeting, cushions, kitchenette and bathroom floor tiles. The bed is a splash of white, as are the bathroom walls, fixtures and deep spa bath with shower. The evo products are white too. A frosted glass feature wall with a muted Cullen motif divides the open-plan space.
Melbourne’s well-regarded HuTong Dumpling Bar, furnished with Chinese antiques, serves authentic Peking duck and yum cha for lunch and dinner. The New York–inspired Gramercy Bistro is open all day for breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, steaks and cocktails. Both eateries have bars and outdoor areas. The hotel’s rooftop deck extends from a small gym decorated with spray paint, while well-known hair artistes work in the on-site salon.
