Private 60-acre resort with spacious family-friendly units on the unspoiled East Coast of Mauritius
One of Mauritius’s most come-hither hotels, the unabashedly romantic Constance Le Prince Maurice is a 60-acre resort of Feng Shui-inspired bungalows flanked by lush tropical gardens and Indian Ocean. Spice Island elegance abounds in the marble-floored lobby, with vaulted thatch roofs, four trickling fountains and a colonnade that sweeps your eye out to the slate-blue-tiled infinity pool and the sparkling azure Indian Ocean. It’s just shy of over-the-top, and right in that sweet spot of exotic appeal, thanks to the vision of Mauritian architect Jean-Marc Eynaud.
Bed and Bath
Equally ornate are the 76 guestrooms and 13 villas, where saffron-colored fabrics, colonial-style furniture and polished teak floors celebrate Mauritius’s heritage as a stop along the nautical spice route. Thatched-roof villas are intimate overwater bungalows equipped with living and dining areas. Spacious bathrooms are nearly as big as the bedrooms and feature separate showers and soaking Whirlpool tubs.
The food is superb, especially at the fine dining restaurant Archipel, which helped earn the resort its status as the country’s only member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux hotel association. The second restaurant, Barachois, earns points for its design — it occupies five connected docks over a marine reserve — and its simple grilled seafood. Likewise, the spa is one of the island’s standouts, with treatments ranging from Frenchified Sisley facials to rigorously authentic ayurvedic massages, and more of that stunning architecture: The two couples treatment suites are some of the most romantic around.
