How to Get There
We love staying here and are fortunate to be able to come twice a year. It’s an easy flight from San Francisco. We own a timeshare here and never exchange it for somewhere else...why do that when we own a little piece of heaven on the beach?
There are two properties in the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas family. We originally bought an Ocean View unit at the north property and enjoyed that for years, but then decided that we preferred the amenities and rooms at the south property so we switched and upgraded to an Ocean Front unit. I’m sitting here right now on our large lanai looking out at an unobstructed view of Ka’anapali Beach. Obligatory photo included with this review.
Sure, over the years we’ve had our issues with unenthusiastic staff not treating our requests with enough seriousness, and sometimes there have been issues with our room or the property (the underground parking lot at south property is ridiculously small), but who cares, we’re on vacation, life is short, and we’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Chill out and enjoy Maui, and be happy to be able to come here.
First time in 01/17, family of four, we Loved everything about it!!! Second time here 10/18, same family of four, we were a bit disappointed. Was told we were booked in the North Tower with the Full kitchen, one bedroom; got there and was told we were actually in the South Tower, much smaller kitchen, and in the tiny Studio room, we managed even with the tiny 8" x 21" sink; super tiny. Shower was a bit moldy, floor (carpet) was super dirty. Grounds weren't as upkept as our previous visit. The BBQ grills at tower 4 were clean but didn't start easy. I had to use a lighter (from the concierge in tower 4) for two nights, a piece of printer paper I got from the concierge on the ground level of tower 4 and used the tiki torches to light the grill for two nights. One grill out of five barely lit, the rest was a crap shoot. I called front desk on our second night and they said they will let engineering know. I asked two maintenance employees that walked by the grills and they said they would let engineering know. Well, this went on for our entire stay (eight days), engineering never came. The people I met and chatted with on this trip were those other poor souls that I had to help light their BBqs at tower 4. While at the pool it took forever for someone to come by and take our drink orders. This was until I met an employee by the name of Makena. She was friendly and courteous, treated us well, and always looked for us while she was on shift. Once this happened, our drinks came quickly from Makena. We saw employees step over empty drink cups in the pool area. Sharla at the front desk was very friendly and expeditious to our requests and inquiries. One morning, at 745 am, my son and I went to get fresh pool towels and turn in our damp dirty ones. The shack was shuttered but I heard someone working in there. I had no idea what time it opened so I politely called out "hello" and the employee stopped moving and it got quiet. Once again I called "hello, may I please get some fresh pool towels," the employee was gruff in response and said; "at 8". So I said "thank you" and left. My son and I returned at 752 am and the towel cart was there. We asked for towels and received them. I feel the employee could have conveniently told us the towels weren't there yet and to please come back in a few minutes. We were extremely close to buying a time share the second time around but felt the issues and lack of service, and the lack of grounds keeping swayed us not to.
Resort was very easy to find after you pass town of Lahaina. Check-in process was a breeze and they upgraded our room to ocean view. We stayed in a studio unit with kitchenette (refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher). The bathroom was very nice with a huge shower and separate bath tub. It was hot & humid the week we stayed in Maui so returning to our cool air-conditioned room was refreshing. When you stay here, there is a free shuttle that will take you to other Westin hotels in the area and there is another shuttle that will drop you off in Lahaina. We loved that this resort had no resort fees but it does charge for overnight parking. If you need any ideas on things to do in Maui, there is a concierge desk in several buildings to help you plan your day. We had the buffet breakfast at Auntie's Kitchen and we thought the food & service was outstanding.
The only issue we had during our stay was when new guests occupied the room next to us and they had super loud kids who continuously screamed. After we called the front desk, hotel security called our room to inform us they will be calling the other room to ask them to keep the noise down. Although I appreciated security doing that, their kids continued to be loud for most of the evening. Since the rooms have mostly tile flooring, the intensity of noise from screaming kids was much higher.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Ocean Resort Villas and loved the location near the beach. The pools and hot tubs were well maintained and there were plenty of lounge chairs. We found the staff very welcoming and helpful with any special requests.
Loved staying here! Was extremely convenient location. Loved that the hot tub is open 24 hrs (not everyone goes to sleep at 10pm). Loved the fire pits. Mick McCarthy was our Concierge & he was absolutely excellent!! Even our front desk person Krystal was amazing— nice & even took pics of us with our costumes. Both went above & beyond. Can’t wait to stay again.
Perfect week at the South Villas. We arrived very late and had no issues checking in, we were even offered free valet parking for the night. Our villa was cool, clean, and inviting. Although we did not have any sort of view from our veranda, it was nice just to sit and read with a cup of coffee in the mornings. The only amenity lacking in the room was a clothesline which could easily be installed over the tub. Also wish it were possible to turn on the water closet light separately so the fan didn’t run every time we entered the sink area. Instructions posted by the thermostat would have been helpful too. Great to have a full kitchen and washer/dryer with laundry soap provided. We enjoyed the South pool with water slide each day. We chose loungers in the shade of the trees between the beach and pool and alternated between the two all day long - wonderful! I do wish they’re weren’t a charge for beach umbrellas; probably would have spent more time at the beach if they were free. We walked up to the Nanea pool one day but preferred the South pool (North/River pool is currently under construction). Pirate ship pool for the littles is super. The snorkeling right off the beach (when calm) was even better than our pricey trip to Molokini. Twice we found and followed a sea turtle along the shoreline; the highlight of our trip. Early morning strolls on the beach were pleasantly uncrowded and you really can’t beat the sunsets! Fun to have the Westin hot dog/shave ice truck parked by the pool one afternoon too. Poolside drink/food service was prompt. Fun surprise on our last afternoon when a group of Hawaiian dancers performed on the lawn for 45 minutes - what a treat! Staff are friendly and helpful at every turn - even when we got locked out of our villa. Breakfast at Auntie’s Kitchen is terrific. We’ll definitely be back. Mahalo!
