Overview

The Review

At the top of Nantucket’s historic Step Lane, the gingerbread-trimmed Veranda House is perched on one of the highest points on the island, its three wraparound porches affording unparalleled views of the famous sailboat-filled harbor. Hop off the ferry at Straight Wharf and don’t bother with a taxi; this seemingly tucked-away charmer is an easy walk.

Although Veranda House has the water views and breezy seaside ambience that Nantucket is famous for, not to mention lush gardens filled with hydrangea bushes, expansive terraces with wicker seats and a manicured lawn dotted with white Adirondack chairs perfect for cocktail hour. But the décor is something of a surprise: It’s thoroughly modern, with bleach-white walls and zebra print divans.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/967/prop-14118-1312403623-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Cocktails are best enjoyed on the terrace or in one of the white Adirondack chairs on the lawn.”}

The result is an intriguing mash-up of modern sophistication and Old New England spirit. All 18 sun-drenched guestrooms have sophisticated decor and simple, clean lines. Whitewashed walls, crisp white Frette linens and Simon Pearce lamps provide the perfect canvas for one-of-a-kind, colorful accents like a tangerine antique Chinese trunk serving as a coffee table or a vibrant red armchair. The bathrooms are no less appealing; many are outfitted with rain showers, antique soaking tubs and deep farmer sinks.

With its inn-like warmth (gourmet breakfasts, champagne and cookies every afternoon on the veranda), it’ll be tempting to stay on the property. But the inn is an ideal jumping-off point to explore the beautiful 48-square-mile island, whether with a jaunt into the boutique-filled town or the easy 15-minute walk to famed Jetties Beach and the Brant Point Lighthouse.

Stayed here the week before Memorial Day. Staff is very helpful. Rooms are small but very clean. Continental breakfast excellent. Cookies and wine in the afternoon gave us a chance to meet others. Great location.

Excellent getaway!

We come back again and again to get away at this gem. Carl has outstanding hospitality and makes you feel at home. We love the wine happy hour and decadent breakfast each morning. You will truly enjoy your time at the Veranda House!

The Veranda House is always one of my absolute favorite hotels in ACK.

Everything is perfect...innkeepers, breakfast, sparkly and fresh cookies and beautifully decorated rooms. I have stayed here several times over the last 5 years and would give 5 stars every time.
What I love most is the attention to detail, decor, cozy living space in the lobby.

This is our 4th year staying at the Veranda House and we love it. The breakfast is outstanding, the hospitality can not be beat and the General Manager is super friendly and helpful. Truly a wonderful place to stay for the weekend. The location can't be beat either. We will be back next year.

A wonderful spot with gracious host

Sought a hotel from which to begin to explore Nantucket. Found Veranda House, much of which is 100s of years old. Perfect choice. Welcoming host, outstanding crew including someone who carried bags up the stairs (3 at a time!) and others who kept the place immaculate. New York Times and Boston Gllobe Daily, pleasant breakfast (even gluten-free items upon request), comfortable rooms, excellent advice about what to see and where to eat. We will surely rerun.
