A coastal stay in the picturesque Moroccan town of Essaouira, within walking distance of the beach
The characterful, historic port and resort town of Essaouira on Morocco’s Atlantic coast is famed for its long sandy beaches, crumbling seafront ramparts and hip but laid-back vibe. Behind the ramparts, a heady blend of Portuguese, French and Berber architecture frames the warren-like streets of the medina, also home to the charming Riad Dar L’Oussia, a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. Once a caravanserai, then a storage warehouse, it has been an exquisitely restored to its former glory under the guidance of proud owner Yves Pelissier.
Greeted by solid stone walls and an intense sky blue wooden doorway, carry on through to a beautiful blue-tiled patio courtyard, scattered with palms, rugs and comfy seating. On the ground floor is a cool vaulted restaurant, while above are three galleried floors that ooze Andalusian style. Bright, white décor is softened by sandy hues, brightened by vibrant oriental carpets, rich textiles and carved furniture. The high point (both literally and figuratively) is the lovely roof terrace and solarium, where you can kick back on a gleaming white lounger and take in the sweeping views over to the beach and shimmering sea beyond.
