Revamped 17th-century palace in the medina, with a roof terrace, a garden courtyard and a large plunge pool

The Look

Riad El Mezouar is a historic 17th-century villa, recently refurbished into an intimate five-room boutique and located in the heart of the medina. With mosaic tiles and fountains, the hotel is a mix of Arabian and Andalusian architecture, with a peaceful central courtyard surrounded by orange and grapefruit trees and decorated with hand-fired tiles from Fes. Inside, there are fireplaces to curl up by in the winter months, while summer is best spent on the roof terrace with views over the snow-capped Atlas mountains.

Bed & Bath

The five rooms – Warda, Rokham, Yasmin, Zeitoun and Mezouar – are equipped with modern comforts but still have plenty of traditional Moroccan charm. Blending Arabic, European and Asian styles, all overlook the courtyard; two are situated around the courtyard and three are on the gallery level. En-suite bathrooms are suitably luxurious and have been decorated with traditional Moroccan zellij mosaic tile work and tadelakt, a speciality of Marrackech.

The central courtyard is a beautiful garden retreat, with beds of traditional aromatic plants, an atrium-style plunge pool, open-air Moorish alcoves and a grand salon. It’s a haven for butterflies and collared doves; the perfect spot to enjoy a restorative glass of Moroccan mint tea after the throng of the soukhs and Jema el Fna Square. The hotel’s friendly (multi-lingual) staff is on hand to help arrange outings beyond the medina. Choose from hiking trips to the Atlas Mountains, cultural tours to Essaouira and in-house lessons with the riad’s cook, after shopping for fresh produce in the soukh.

Exceptional Riad in Marrakech

We stayed at Riad El Mezouar recently and found the establishment to be really most exceptional. Romaine was a fantastic host being both really friendly and helpful. She gave us invaluable tips about the locality and what to see in the relatively short time we were there (three nights) The riad itself is stunning and it has been decorated and furnished to a very high standard. We really liked the fact that it only has a handful of bedrooms. The staff are charming and attentive and the food we had there was the best we had in the city. If you haven't been to a riad before, then this is the place to stay! It comes highly recommended. Thank you to Romaine and to her staff for making our stay so memorable.

Riad El Mezouar - Morrocan gem in Marrakesh

We were welcomed whole-heartedly by the fabulous Romaine, the Châtelaine:-) ,and her excellent staff! Top rate experience as our Junior Suite offered a very comfortable space, and whilst we were going through gallons of fresh mint tea at all hours of the day, nothing was ever an issue, even last minute changes to our diary resulting in access required to the Riad at ridiculous hours. We ate fantastically well there, with tables romantically placed by the pool side, as, much to our enjoyment, the whole place is very stylishly decorated! The private atmosphere offers a heavenly space and the perfect escape from the hustle & bustle of the busy Medina. Love the fact, that you can almost take over the hotel for a private function or special occasion, as it's very 'boutique and intimate', which is just perfect for welcoming friends and family in a 'home from home' surrounding.

Delightful riad

My second stay here at El Mezouar. Love it! It is a delightful place and was perfect for our small group celebrating a significant birthday together. Our host Romaine is a superwoman ... her attention to details is unsurpassed in my experience of small hotels. She and her staff are attentive but unobtrusive, managing our stay with ease though it was Ramadan. The breakfast was abundant, varied and delicious. Highly recommend this stunning riad.
