Artists and rock stars (such as Jimi Hendrix) have long been aware of Essaouira’s charms, where a picturesque harbour and sand beaches meet spice-scented souks. And with its authentic Moorish décor and super-central location, Hotel Palais des Ramparts is an idyllic bolthole in this enchanting destination.
As the name suggests, it’s positioned right beside the old city ramparts, with the bustling stalls of the Medina on your doorstep. A stone’s throw from the sea, you can enjoy the sight of the Atlantic breakers rolling onto the beach from the hotel’s rooftop terrace – where breakfast is served every morning.
The restored 18th-century building spreads across four floors (unusually for a riad, it has an elevator) and encircles a private central courtyard filled with palm trees. A carefully chosen array of paintings, traditional wooden furniture and textiles makes each of its 23 rooms and suites unique. Its tranquil spa provides an ideal sanctuary after a day out exploring the souks or wind-surfing on the beach, complete with an authentic Moroccan Hammam as well as a range of treatments and massages.
How to Get There
We stayed here for slightly over a week. The "basic" rooms are clean with large windows to the central "well". Plenty of room here and a large bathroom. On our second visit we stayed on the second floor: there rooms are very big with two beds in a large mezzanine. After the personal touch of riads the breakfast was formulaic and acceptable, but a step down: the price of being in a medium sized hotel, I guess. there are two lounge areas at the top and the location (just inside the walls, by the harbour) cannot be beaten. The staff were brilliant!
We had a very nice experience at this Riad, wonderful location walking distance to everything. Our room was on the top floor right below the roof terrance - which had lovely views. Comfortable room with a deep bathtub and plenty of space, nice lighting and a window that opened up into the center of the Riad, but still gave us lots of natural light. It didn't seem too busy during our stay, which was quiet and peaceful. My only complaints would be that they have a hammam onsite, which we were going to go to, but when we ask about it on Saturday they didn't mention to us that it was closed on Sundays - the staff was friendly though and they did give us the name of another location to go to that was open. Finally, they do have housekeeping that clean the rooms, but they bothered us a little by knocking on the door constantly when we were napping from jet lag on our first day, even though we said "no thank you" several times, and then coming by at 9am the next day and waking us. A "do not disturb" sign would be a great addition to this Riad. Other than that, it was a great experience, and Essaouira was definitely my favorite part of Morocco.
This hotel was in a good location and the service was very friendly and helpful. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the massage in the spa, given that it didn’t look like a very large facility from the entrance. This was a “dry“ facility, so if you were looking for a drink, you would need to go outside the hotel property. Not a four or five star property, but very nice for what it is.
The hotel was just 50 metres from the city walls and the sea and ideally located for our tourism.
The room was very comfortable and clean and the staff very helpful - especially Maude
Breakfast was served on the roof terrace but protected from the wind. It provided great views over the city, the port and the sea
We stayed in this lovely Riad as part of a two week Morocco tour. The Riad is beautiful with comfortable rooms and very friendly staff. The view from the roof is spectacular. A good breakfast is served in an enclosed area on the roof or, in warm weather, outdoors. The location is perfect.
