Artists and rock stars (such as Jimi Hendrix) have long been aware of Essaouira’s charms, where a picturesque harbour and sand beaches meet spice-scented souks. And with its authentic Moorish décor and super-central location, Hotel Palais des Ramparts is an idyllic bolthole in this enchanting destination.
As the name suggests, it’s positioned right beside the old city ramparts, with the bustling stalls of the Medina on your doorstep. A stone’s throw from the sea, you can enjoy the sight of the Atlantic breakers rolling onto the beach from the hotel’s rooftop terrace – where breakfast is served every morning.
The restored 18th-century building spreads across four floors (unusually for a riad, it has an elevator) and encircles a private central courtyard filled with palm trees. A carefully chosen array of paintings, traditional wooden furniture and textiles makes each of its 23 rooms and suites unique. Its tranquil spa provides an ideal sanctuary after a day out exploring the souks or wind-surfing on the beach, complete with an authentic Moroccan Hammam as well as a range of treatments and massages.
How to Get There
Words cannot describe how lovely this Riyadh style hotel is! The design, the location, the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the guestrooms. Our room was located on the top floor looking over the Atlantic with waves breaking just outside our window! The views were amazing particularly at sunrise and sunset when the call for prayers echoed from the mosque. The Hammam and massage was such a treat. So romantic like 1001 Arabian Nights!
It's a very lovely riad in Essaouria. Hotel's interior was nice, modern, but at the same time very Moroccan. Roof terrace has a great view, it's also a great place to have breakfast or sunbathe. We stayed there for a week and the location was perfect to take into consideration restaurants and the wall. The hotel had very friendly crew, they spoke French and English and we would certainly love to stay there again.
We stayed one night with friends last week, could not fault any aspect of our stay.
Great location, friendly and helpful staff, they came to meet us and escort us to the hotel and helped us with directions on departure.
Good breakfast served on the roof terrace which has a lovely sea view.
Rooms were spacious and clean
We visit Essaouira often and this is the best accommodation we have found. We will be back.
This is a lovely riad in a very convenient location - right in the medina. The staff are WONDERFUL: very accommodating and eager to serve. We asked to change our room on the first night and the wish was granted without hesitation. They even upgraded us again after the second night to a room with a stunning sea veiw! Essaouira is very windy, but the terrace has a plexiglass cover that makes breakfast inviting. Dinner is served in the lobby level restaurant with traditional Moroccan fair. The location makes it easy to walk around the medina or out along the beach with no worries of getting lost. A great place to stay!
This was a great place to stay in Essaouira. The staff were lovely – they made us feel very welcome and valued. We had some great conversations with them about living in the city and the culture of Morocco from a resident’s point of view. They really wanted us to enjoy our stay and helped with all the questions we had. We had a rooftop room in the hotel with amazing views over the city and the nearby sea. The room was well appointed and after several days walking in the Sahara, we really appreciated the full-length bath (which my husband could even fully stretch out in!) – it also appeared to be made of cob but it worked. We also enjoyed the live music played at the neighbouring rooftop restaurant of Salut Maroc which we could look down on from our windows. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so memorable.
