New-age wine country retreat with a royal connection and a 16,000-square-foot destination spa
Bubbles and beauty secrets are an unlikely combination, but you’ll find copious amounts of both at this French paradise—part boozy fantasy, part wellness wonderland. On a hill above the villages of Champillon and Hautvillers, this reimagined chalet is split between a refreshed 19th-century coaching inn (rumored to have served as an important stopping point for French kings en route to coronations at a nearby cathedral) and a newer Modernist wing. All 49 green-and-regal-gold rooms, designed by a member of the Taittinger family, are beautiful extensions of their vineyard surroundings—though the 1,070-square-foot, fit-for-an-empress Josephine Suite (named for Napoleon’s first wife) is a standout with its dressing room and skylights. Menus at both the property’s restaurants—Le Royal, which serves up elevated farm-to-table fare on custom Maison Fragile china, and the more casual Le Bellevue, a Marne Valley-facing bistro that churns out heartier plates—were deliberately crafted to complement champagne. Recalibrate at the larger-than-life spa, where you can indulge in a eucalyptus-scented sauna and soothing candle massages.
In the Area
The property is a 90-minute drive from Charles de Gaulle Airport, though just 10 minutes from the Epernay train station. Its Marne Valley backdrop is a bucolic maze of vineyards and preserved villages; the hotel’s extensive immersion menu includes boat excursions on the Marne River, visits to champagne houses, and electric bicycle tours of nearby Hautvillers, long considered the cradle of champagne (it was here, in a Benedictine abbey, that monk Dom Perignon discovered the process of bubble-brewing). Not that you need to leave to get a taste: the property’s vaulted cellar can host intimate eight-person champagne tastings led by chief sommelier Daniel Pires.
How to Get There
Stayed at the RCH for 2 nights whilst we explored the Champagne region. The hotel is beyond beautiful. The rooms and design are of the highest quality and all of the rooms have excellent views over Epernay. The valet staff are excellent and nothing is too much for them. Christopher was in particular a pleasure to deal with and so helpful! Thank you for a lovely weekend ... we will be back!!!
Dave & Rachael
My wife and I recently visited the Champagne Region during several foggy but beautiful days in May. I chose Royal Champagne because the website shows beautiful photography of the property sitting at the top of the slope among vineyards.
However, photography does not do the hotel justice.
What we loved about the property:
The room product - beautifully done, contemporary, nearly new and with a spectacular view.
The bed - consistent with ultra luxury brands.
The bathroom - double vanity set up with all the accoutrements.
The Champagne Tasting. We tasted with Arturo, their Sommelier and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Highly recommended.
But, most of all ... Karim, their superlative Chief Concierge. I started corresponding with Karim over email weeks before our arrival and he was a tremendous resource. He arranged our tasting, he arranged a beautiful dinner in Reims and he also arranged transportation to Beaune, lunch and a tour of one of the premier wine producers in Burgundy. Wow. In many ways, he made this hotel experience special for us. Thank you.
So, try Royal Champagne Hotel if you already haven’t and when you get there, find Karim!
The Royal Champagne is simply wonderful, whether it be the staff, the rooms or the view. Perched on top of a hill overlooking the vineyards towards Epernay, with woods to the west it is hard to imagine a better setting.
First you are greeted by a friendly English fluent staff in their spacious lobby. When we arrived a large group had arrived before us. Unlike most hotels, we were escorted to their rooftop bar and treated to a glass of good Champagne. They came to get us when our room was ready. The bar views are great and I recommend stopping by to just take it all in.
We went down one floor to our room, 29 where upon entering we were greeted with water and fruit. The room is massive, with a king size bed, floor to ceiling windows, an outside sitting area, a large bathroom and closet. We had a view of the valley and vineyards. We would have been comfortable there for a week. The bathroom boasts two sinks, a tub, large shower and oversized towels. Need 3 sinks? There is another one in the separate toilet area. The room comes equipped with a coffee/tea maker and other luxury amenities such as robes.
The bed is on the hard side and they do need to give more pillows as the two they provided were too thin. We asked for more and got them without a fuss. There is turndown service and bottled water is always available.
The hotel itself boasts a spa, 2 pools, workout room and restaurant with a Michelin Star. More about the restaurant in a separate review. We did not get a chance to use the pools or spa as we were fully booked with wine tours, but make sure you include in your visit the surrender room in Reims and other aspects of the areas history.
Runners and hikers, the forest nearby is a treasure. An access point is near the hotel just down a hill. Trails go everyone so mark your location as you go so you don’t get lost. Some are paved and many are dirt. Bikes are provided by the hotel AND they have electric assist. You will need this as there are hills everywhere. Biking to Epernay would be a fun trip.
Overall we can’t imagine staying anywhere else if we return. It was a great experience.
Had one of the best lunches ever at this great location.
We arrived early and had a coffee in the bar area, before ordering meals and a glass of champagne. ( we are on the champagne region)
We just the 3 course meal for 39 euro.
1st was the prawns on a bed of beans, delicious. 2nd was the lamb, I had fish, both were superb. Fresh, full of flavour with a rich sauce. 3rd was some of the best cheesecake the group had ever had. It was a designer sweet treat.
Food, service and the view out towards the vineyards was fantastic.
If you ever go to Champagne this is the hotel you should stay! Beautiful property with a beautiful view. Rooms where very nice, good size and lovely deco´. Spa was also very nice. The restaurant was good and the breakfast. Big thanks to the staff you were super!
