A skyscraper sleep south of Manila within easy reach of Laguna de Bay, with an eighth-floor pool deck and bar
Scanning the skyline of Alabang, an upscale neighborhood around 15 miles south of Manila, you can’t miss the Crimson Filinvest, a hotel housed within a 28-story glass and steel skyscraper. Chandelier-lit elevators whisk guests to the gargantuan lobby on the eighth floor. Subdued corporate-chic decor is accented by regional art, including pieces by Filipino sculpture superstar Daniel dela Cruz. The opulent vibe is only slightly dampened by the conference rooms right off the lobby.
Bed and Bath
A cunning combination of class and comfort, the guestrooms are smart and simple, with a long marble desk adjacent to a kingsize bed, and powerful AC. The TVs are on or above the desk — possibly problematic for multitaskers — and the minibar is virtually nonexistent, but late arrivals can call the prompt 24-hour room service. Suites are more spacious and offer small kitchens. Bathrooms are tasteful, with large mirrors and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads (none of the bathrooms have tubs).
Café Eight serves standard breakfast fare, with both European and Asian options. Lunch and dinner are buffet-style, and there's a small à la carte menu. Head to the eighth-floor deck to hit the pool or sip a cocktail from the bar. The poolside drinking spot serves refreshing concoctions including a mean Manila Sunrise. An impressive selection of fine cheeses, pastries and chocolates are available at the Deli Shop, and you can sweat it off next door in the slick fitness center, where professional trainers are on call. On the 19th floor, access to the Executive Lounge (including butler service) is part of an exclusive package available for guests staying in Suites.
In the Area
Filinvest City is home to malls, restaurants and spas, but most non-business travelers head to downtown Manila to explore the historic areas of Intramuros and Makati. The closest non-Manila tourist attractions are farther south. A 30-minute drive takes you to Tagaytay City, right on Lake Taal. Start with a hearty brunch at Breakfast at Antonio’s and hop a boat to the Taal volcano. Also in the vicinity of Lugano is Pagsanjan, where you can ride the rapids of the Bombongan River and see Pagsanjan Falls, which feature in the final scenes of Apocalypse Now.
