A desert island dream of plunge pool bungalows with an underwater spa, big name DJs and a reef teeming with fish
Barefoot luxe. Since its launch in 2004 (and 2012 refresh), PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi has consistently remained in the top strata of Indian Ocean honeypots. International A-listers from Kate Moss to George Clooney have visited the island, in the North Malé Atoll, for its reinterpretation of Maldivian architecture — think sweeping thatch roofs, open-plan lounges with glowy tables — and its effortless, laid-back cool.
Bed and Bath
Starting at 1,345 square feet, the 43 bungalows sitting on the beach and on stilts above the water are self-contained hideaways with private gardens, plunge pools, outdoor showers and a full suite of high-tech gizmos (including iPods with music selected by resident DJs). The muted color scheme of oatmeal, cream and honey woods keeps the focus on the lagoon views.
Huvafen has some of the country’s best food, including the superb natural preparations of Asian fare at Raw and the gourmet seafood at Salt, lubricated by an extraordinary range of wines from the Vinum’s underground cave. International DJs spin, sometimes with such artists as French graffiti master Lyès-Olivier Sidhoum creating work on the spot. Things are more chill under the water, thanks to the sub-aqua spa, where you can get treatments as reef fish and manta rays glide overhead. The hotel pioneered the use of resident marine biologists, so you can be sure of the reef’s health (and you can help out by adopting coral).
