Get nautical in New England at Higgins Beach Inn. This Maine getaway sits right along the Atlantic and offers you all your favorite staples of a Northeastern seafront stay: opportunities to search for sand dollars and shells on its beach, raw oysters and fresh local fish to dine on, craft brews to drink, a porch from which to gaze at the water. Owned by Migis Hotel Group, it’s a perfect Pine Tree State retreat, where you can fall asleep between soft linens and admire Colonial Revival architecture that you won’t find anywhere outside the region.
When you make it off the century-old property’s recently renovated and reopened grounds, discover a town that’s equally charming. Scarborough inspired one of American realism’s most iconic painters – Winslow Homer – and offers a museum in his former studio, plus proximity to various state parks. If you’re looking to keep up the nautical theme, though, there’s no better option than a whale-watching cruise or lighthouse tour – and you’re just 10 minutes from Portland, Maine’s cultural capital, offering veritable boatloads of such excursions.
All rooms are individually decorated and named, but they have select high-end comforts in common. These include Gilchrist & Soames
The inn’s restaurant is a perfect place to wash down raw oysters with a craft brew. It serves a range of fresh local fish and shellfish in its indoor dining area and on its covered beach-facing porch. Head off the premises for plenty of other top-notch clam shacks and oyster bars in the region.
Your inn sits directly upon the beach, if sunbathing and taking barefoot walks is your thing. (Some of the area shores are great for surfing, as well.) For another taste of the local culture, try horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, canoeing with the Maine Audubon Society or touring Wadsworth-Longfellow House and Two Lights State Park. Portland is only a 10-minute drive.
How to Get There
Great place to relax and unwind. Spent two nights there and even with less than great weather it was a perfect trip. The breakfast and diner were both amazing and do not miss Happy Hour for drink specials and $1 oysters.
I had the opportunity to stay here for one night in June, 2018. I found the staff to be delightfully helpful and the beach a quick, lovely stroll from the hotel. My room had a double bed and plenty of room to stash my gear after a hiking trip. I also appreciated having BeeKind products to use. In addition, the hotel furnishes petit coolers to use as ice buckets.
I ate two meals at the hotel, one breakfast and one dinner. They were both delicious, although the dinner was a bit more inspired. I will definitely stay at this hotel again, especially because Higgins Beach is spectacular place to watch the sunrise, folks surfing and plover chicks gamboling on the beach.
You really can't beat $1 oysters. Though I didn't explore the rest of the menu, I did enjoy too many oysters and wine on the covered deck. Happy hour was topped off with a nice walk down to the beach and for a moment all felt right in the world.
It is a lovely B and B; friendly help. I think there are still some kinks with kitchen help but the food is great! The Rooms, although small, are decorated beautifully and were comfortable. The staff was very helpful. The beach is a short walk!!
We stayed at the Higgins Beach Inn again this year, and loved it. The renovated rooms are so nice and roomy. We had a second floor, king room on the front. Large and comfortable. The staff was outstanding, especially the front desk staff. Check-in and checkout were quick and easy. Breakfast was great. Server was excellent--friendly and professional. We highly recommend the Higgins Beach Inn.
