Modest Madrid hotel with two restaurants and a bar on one of the city’s most famous streets
Drawing inspiration from an 18th-century palace, the InterContinental Madrid is located on Paseo De La Castellana, one of the city’s most famous thoroughfares. The hotel lobby features a giant chandelier and marble floors, while upstairs the modest 302 rooms offer business-friendly conveniences like working desks. Two restaurants serve international and Mediterranean fare under the direction of chef Jose Luque; make reservations at El Jardin del InterContinental for live music and alfresco dining during the summer months. Bar 49 attracts a buttoned up type of clientele, serving sushi, tapas and specialty cocktails like Rossini (fresh strawberries and champagne). And when you venture out to explore the city, you’re a quick walk from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Prado Museum, Real Madrid Museum and upscale Serrano shopping district.
In the Area
For late night entertainment, head to one of the live music boîtes along Calle Echegaray or Calle Huertas for some jazz or flamenco to go with your gin-and-tonic. On Sundays and holidays the Rastro, Madrid’s sprawling flea market, is worth a visit, and it provides a perfect segue into a rioja-soaked lunch in trendy La Latina. More active types can finish off the weekend — or the workday — with a jog (or just a stroll and an ice cream) in Madrid’s green lung, Retiro Park, or by pottering around the sprawling gardens of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid. Art lovers will be in seventh heaven at the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums right on the doorstep.
