Set on nine acres of lush garden and landscaped lawn, this immaculate heritage hotel dates from 1903 and can count the Prince of Wales (later King George V) as a former guest. The 40 rooms are in keeping with the property’s rich history; suites come with silk drapes, canopy beds and mother-of-pearl mosaics, some with sweeping views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gwalior Fort. Feast on Asian and Indian delicacies in Silver Saloon’s plush courtyard, or relax in a more casual palm-shaded setting at the Court. And be sure to try the Art Deco–style Bada Bar for after-dinner cocktails. With stained glass windows, chunky colonial-style furniture and an enormous billiards table, this buzzy, coral-pink drinking hole positively drips Old World glamour. Put time aside to enjoy the pool area: The tree-lined deck and hot tub are decorated with green mosaic tiles and two beautifully carved stone lions. And don’t miss the signature Sushupti treatment at JIVA Spa: a full-body massage using a blend of honey, rice and cream.
In the Area
The Usha Kiran Palace is well placed for exploring the main Rajasthan hot spots, including the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and Udaipur. But there’s plenty to do off the well-trodden tourist trail, too. Choose from whitewater rafting, ballooning or rock climbing, or ask the concierge about parasailing at the enormous Tigra Dam, just 12 miles away. Adventure travelers can head out on a motorbike expedition through Madhav National Park. Common sightings include gazelles, leopards and kingfishers, and there are pythons and crocodiles at nearby Sakhya Sagar Lake.
How to Get There
We stayed three nights here, and found it very comfortable with a big room, dressing room and bathroom! The breakfast was especially good with great masala dhosa and Indian masala chai. The heritage tour of the property was interesting and service was excellent. The original rosewood lift was especially amusing as it played Indian music every time it was used. The pool area is set deep in the garden and really well kept.
Stayed in taj for one night. The whole experience was amazing. The hotel was neat and clean. Whole staff was very helpful. Very well maintained. Breakfast was awesome. Free yoga classes and access to gym. Love to visit again.
It was a pleasant stay being at Taj Hotel, the staff members Pawan and Gagan are really helpful and of supporting nature, ensuring that we really enjoy the utmost cleanliness and service quality. We were upgraded to a deluxe room by them. The evening and mornings are so lovely in that place that you start feeling like a royal yourself. The food is delivered 24X7. And the quality is maintained. I just loved the pool surroundings and the courtyard. Travel desk was very helpful and quite reasonable. Overall our experience was good. Rooms were spotless. This is a very nicely restored historical palace and the only place I would consider staying when in Gwalior. This heritage hotel is the perfect place to relax for the weekend. Everything is perfect, the service, the food, the swimming pool, the spa . And the staff is very helpful, professional and kind. The hotel is very near the Gwalior Fort. We cherish our one day stay there.
Our second visit to Gwalior and Usha Kiran Palace Hotel. We had wonderful memories from our previous visit and this time didn’t disappoint. We were warmly welcomed, making us feel like long lost friends, a soft drink was presented and we were given a refresher as to the history of this over hundred year old guest palace. The ancient elevator had been restored and took us up to our room, which was upgraded to a luscious, grandiose suite, as if taken out of “A thousand and one nights”. It opened up to a huge terrace with views of the famous Fort and of the gardens with flocks of green parrots. A wedding party was going on in the gardens with music, dancing and wedding guests in gorgeous outfits. Next day executive chef Rakesh Gonyial demonstrated his organic vegetable garden, which he had created from a disused, rubbish strewn, forgotten plot in the back of the palace. It now boasts fruit trees and varieties of lush vegetables and herbs used in his kitchen. We fondly remembered chef Rakesh, as on our previous visit he had generously showed us his kitchen, explained some of his special spice preparations and even given us some samples. Some of his dishes are truly masterpieces. We only had time for one night in Usha Kiran this time, but whenever in Gwalior, the friendly, yet professional staff and the ambiance of the whole place makes it the only place we will stay.
Hotel with Good location and accommodation. Beautiful grounds, but they were not really accessible for a wedding. But we could take part in the fun festivities. Lovely spa and swimming pool. Fine and quality food. The chef was happy to converse and listen to our needs. Overall, it was a wonderful experience,
