Overview

Luxe 40-room former palace set on nine acres, with two top-notch restaurants and an Art Deco–style bar

The Lowdown

Set on nine acres of lush garden and landscaped lawn, this immaculate heritage hotel dates from 1903 and can count the Prince of Wales (later King George V) as a former guest. The 40 rooms are in keeping with the property’s rich history; suites come with silk drapes, canopy beds and mother-of-pearl mosaics, some with sweeping views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gwalior Fort. Feast on Asian and Indian delicacies in Silver Saloon’s plush courtyard, or relax in a more casual palm-shaded setting at the Court. And be sure to try the Art Deco–style Bada Bar for after-dinner cocktails. With stained glass windows, chunky colonial-style furniture and an enormous billiards table, this buzzy, coral-pink drinking hole positively drips Old World glamour. Put time aside to enjoy the pool area: The tree-lined deck and hot tub are decorated with green mosaic tiles and two beautifully carved stone lions. And don’t miss the signature Sushupti treatment at JIVA Spa: a full-body massage using a blend of honey, rice and cream.

In the Area

The Usha Kiran Palace is well placed for exploring the main Rajasthan hot spots, including the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and Udaipur. But there’s plenty to do off the well-trodden tourist trail, too. Choose from whitewater rafting, ballooning or rock climbing, or ask the concierge about parasailing at the enormous Tigra Dam, just 12 miles away. Adventure travelers can head out on a motorbike expedition through Madhav National Park. Common sightings include gazelles, leopards and kingfishers, and there are pythons and crocodiles at nearby Sakhya Sagar Lake.

Memorable stay at Taj Usha Kiran Palace

Visited Gwalior after four years. Most tempting was once again staying at My Most Favourite Taj Usha Kiran Palace. It was like coming back home. Beautiful palacious hotel with beautiful landscape, big rooms, neat and clean seeming pool, spa. Above all splendid service level, courteous staff, personalised service. Delicious food of all varieties. Veg and Non Veg. thali with all varieties is best option for lone travellers.

a good and very comfortable stay. excellent room backed by equally good service. it was very refreshing to sit out in the room and have a majestic view of the gardens. plentiful rain made the enviornment extremely pleasing.

I might be biased having been unexpectedly upgraded to a beautiful suite with a balcony overlooking the garden and pool. But I really appreciated the understated service, friendly but not pushy, not pretending "to get to know you" stuff. The spa has an otherworldly feel, tucked back behind one wing of the property, enhanced with beautiful garden spots and ponds. The pool, as should be, is not the centerpiece or main view of the property (except for my suite - at a distance), so you can swim in private. Service is swift and courteous, without ever resorting to unnecessary flourish.
They know you are there to have your own experience - and they want to make it a good one. But they also don't call to see why you aren't having dinner (as some will) or send three people when only one is necessary. The front desk and the gatekeepers are good at what they do, friendly but not fawning. I felt lucky to be there for two nights, and could easily return - not even for the many merits of visiting Gwalior - just for this hotel itself.
