A 19th-century hotel in the center of Lyon with glam Art Deco interiors and an intimate champagne bar
La Vie en Rouge. The Art Deco lobby of this former 19th-century petit palace is dominated by vibrant shades of red. Arched doorways, magnificently painted mural ceilings, sparkling chandeliers, plush velvet chairs, stained glass windows and an authentic 1930s gilded cage elevator create a sense of decadent grandeur. Add impeccable service and an elegant bar to the mix, and it's as if you’ve just stepped into a bygone era.
Bed & Bath
The guestrooms range from a cozy 194 square feet (Double Room) to 301 square feet (Carlton Room). Comfy beds sit alongside Louis Vuitton–inspired wardrobes, a work desk and period-style chairs, and the Carlton’s signature red is used liberally in each room. Bathrooms feature oversize round Deco mirrors and are stocked with Cinq Mondes toiletries. In place of a Do Not Disturb sign, you can opt for a more mellow "Silence. I'm still dreaming" door hanger.
Although there's no restaurant on-site, you can order room service from the adjacent Le Centre by Georges, an excellent brasserie from Michelin-starred chef George Blanc, until 11 p.m. The menu is predominantly meat-based (beef is a specialty), but inventive fish and pasta dishes are also on offer. The buffet breakfast is served in a wood-paneled, stained-glassed lounge, and the intimately lit champagne bar serves signature cocktails (try the fruity Carlton) and hosts weekly musical performances. The tiny spa has a hammam and offers treatments using Cinq Mondes products.
In the Area
Sandwiched between the Saône and Rhone rivers, Place de la Républic is a bustling hub of shops and eateries. Close by, the regal Place des Terreaux is home to the majestic 19th-century Bartholdi fountain, City Hall and the Fine Arts Museum — one of the largest art collections in Europe. A brisk 10-minute walk to the St. Jean district offers a wonderland of Renaissance architecture and medieval traboules (passageways particular to this part of France). Changing gears, visit the neighboring Museum of Miniatures and Cinema for an entertaining look at movie magic.
