The Review

When Maison Souvannaphoum opened in 2005, it was one of the forerunners of luxury in what had been solely a backpacker town. Now there are more glamorous digs in Luang Prabang, but Maison Souvannaphoum has held onto something that many travelers find more precious than luxury trimmings: A sweet simplicity, and a colonial-style grace that fits perfectly in this UNESCO World Heritage city that’s home to more than 1,000 young saffron-robed monks.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2863/prop-18080-1338395504-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Maison Souvannaphoum was one of the first luxury hotels in this backpacker’s paradise.”}Within the heritage site but a 10-minute walk from the main drag (locally known as Foreigner Street, after the backpacker hordes that can still clog it) the hotel is quiet but convenient, an ideal jumping-off point for exploring the area and tranquil refuge at the end of the day — I felt like the ever-smiling staff was unfailingly glad to have me back. Its authentic residential feel stems from the fact that it was originally an actual home of the late Prince Souvannaphouma, former prime minister of Laos, in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Most of the 24 rooms are in a new Garden Wing, with views of the pool or gardens. The top rooms in the Residence Wing — the prince’s colonial mansion — are much more spacious and come with claw-footed bathtubs. Most rooms have balconies, though you may not want to use them in Laos’s steamy heat.

For a small hotel, Maison Souvannaphoum has big-league amenities: An enticing swimming pool, bicycles ready for guests to borrow, and in-room dining. The Angsana Spa is lovely, as is the poolside Elephant Blanc restaurant which serves Western and Laotian fare. None of it is overly fancy, but it feels just right in this enchantingly slow-paced part of the world.
