How to Get There
The Artist's Loft at Loft 523 has a wonderful design edge, with amazingly soft lighting, a comfortable bed, and a deep 'basin' of a tub that is luxurious in its look and feel. Upon first arrival, it appears to be a gem. However, a few things should be understood by anyone wanting to say here. First, there is a club in the lobby that is sometimes open late and is thumping, to say the least. If that's your thing, you'll love it. If not, you might be surprised by how late a hotel club will stay open. It's true that the sound of the club did not carry to our upper floor unit, but can't speak for those on lower floors. The shower is, as my girlfriend's mother would say, "like a little boy peeing on you." It is simply inadequate for a real shower, though the design is very cool. Third, our unit looked out at a brick wall, i.e., no view whatsoever. And last, while trying to resolve a $60 billing error on an approximately $800 bill (it was also VERY expensive for what it was), it took management a number of days to resolve it, which they eventually did (thank you.) But honestly, in this business, immediate customer satisfaction should trump your $60 pittance every time.
We visited New Orleans for a long weekend away and hit the jackpot with this hotel. I found it online and liked the modern vibe of the space and the location (close to the French Quarter but not in it). I read a lot of reviews and was a little worried by some of what I read, but they more than exceeded our expectations. The staff was so friendly and couldn't have been more helpful, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was large and had an awesome tub. New Orleans is a loud and rowdy town, but our room was very, very quiet.
This hotel is a smaller place that is tucked away and feels more like a secret NYC loft condo than a traditional hotel. There is no street sign, so look for the copper clad front door. There is a larger, sister hotel (International House) around the corner and we used the safe there since there are no room safes. We highly recommend Loft 523.
Loft 523 was recommended by the Telegraph newspaper and the pictures looked great, so it was an easy decision to splash out and book two nights during our road trip. In hindsight, we were a little naive.
We were on the top (5th) floor, and the room was.. odd. Although decor was funky: industrial minimalist just as the photos show, the room was huge yet the space was not utilised at all. We had a nice comfy bed but all the other seating options were not comfortable: a hard, low sofa, a plastic office chair or a wicker single seat. This strange impractical theme carried on to the bathroom where the shower had two separate heads, but the water pressure left you wishing they'd stuck with one. The room was so big, with no soft furnishings beyond the bed, and only two tiny windows with views out to a brick wall, that it felt more like a luxury prison cell. Just weird.
Due to noisy neighbours who also smoked weed all day which wafted in to our room, we asked to be moved. This brings me to my second gripe, the service. At check in we were welcomed but there was no explanation as to how things worked or any formal process. his wasn't too bad - we are seasoned travellers - but now we needed to be heard and the nonchalant attitude became irritating. The hipster guy at the desk didn't apologise about our situation but simply dropped phrases like "oh yea, they've been warned about the weed and will be charged for smoking in the room but.. y'know.. it gets to a point when you're like, should I call the cops?" - erm, I don't know, should you? Why are you asking me, your customer, that question? What's your company policy?! In short, there was never any admittance of wrong doing and when we were eventually moved to another room, there was never any compensation or apology offered. The second night was better - the smaller room felt much more normal.
On the whole, not an awful stay, but we had really been looking forward to the experience which was ultimately a let-down. The room felt funky but tired - for what we'd paid I'd expected touches such as a Nespresso machine (or, at least something better than what we'd had at a cheap Motel), a modern TV and/or iPod dock (both were at least 10 years old), more comfort to the room itself beyond the bed, a better shower and a better level of cleanliness.
The location, staff and room were perfect. The room was huge with lots of extras. The location was ideal for our touring. The staff was courteous and helpful. We would highly recommend this hotel and it will be our first choice for accommodations when we are able to visit again.
This hotel was a gem. Large room, amazing shower and close to everything. We came down for a NFL game and wanted to stay within walking distance. We truly loved everything about our stay. It wasn't the easiest to find at first, but that's expected when traveling. Will definitely stay again!
