How to Get There
We stayed in the Artist's Loft and had a wonderful time in New Orleans. The loft itself is very spacious, the bath is beautiful and was a great place to relax in after being out in the bustling town. It is a short walking distance to many places (not that far from the French Quarter). You also are able to use the facilities of the nearby hotel (e.g. the gym). You could hear a bit of noise (e.g. there must have been a family with a few small children staying in a nearby room), but it wasn't loud enough to bother us. Would stay again!
If you want to sleep, do not stay at this hotel. They promote a peaceful atmosphere with their modern design and items placed in your room. The truth is they rent out their bar area for private parties that last until all hours in the morning. One night I was there, the private party lasted until 3 am with drunken people spilling out in front of the hotel making all kinds of noise during the entire party. The music was so loud it vibrated things in my room which was located on the third floor. There is also a local bar across the street that has drunk patrons spilling out in the street any night of the week. And about the time when you do fall asleep, the garbage trucks come around 5 am to empty the garbage bins. Do not recommend, and will not stay here again.
Loft 523 could be a boutique hotel gem. The location in New Orleans central business district is good. Off-site parking is a bit steep ($40/night) after spending $30/night in San Francisco, but there weren't any issues with the valet service.
The property isn't easy to find. We completely missed the signage (very limited) and pulled around Gravier Street a second time. The front desk staff was fine. Upon checking in, we found a caulk gun in our bathtub. I walked the caulk gun down to the front desk. The young lady--in the midst of what was clearly as personal cell call--expressed her horror, accepted the caulk gun, and returned to her call. We're not fussy travelers, but an offer to send housekeeping up to clean the bathroom would have been declined but appreciated. On departure, there was a five-gallon bucket with a can of something within. Apparently, maintenance could use a storage space or some basic lessons in picking up after themselves.
The room itself was comfortable but odd. I'm admittedly not hip enough to understand whatever post-modern irony is embedded in a night stand six inches tall or unfinished concrete floors. The bed was fine and the furnishings adequate. Our view was the backside of another building, although at least there was natural light. The bathroom was roomy and the tub was excellent.
Loft 523 isn't terribly expensive (by large metro area standards), but it could have been a great value with a little more polish and attention to detail. A little less focus on clever and more on the customer would go a long way. And for Heaven's sake, tell the maintenance staff that rooms and hallways are not their storage spaces.
A fellow by the name of Greg, was very helpful and gave excellent customer service. Every question we had or anything we needed he seemed eager and delighted to help.
My room was 2 E, with the enclosed patio.
Thanks Greg! And Everyone else that made the trip over the top!
Very unique and spacious hotel within walking distance of Canal and Bourbon streets as well as Harrah's Casino. Would definitely stay at this location again. There's a club within the hotel but we weren't in the room long enough for it to be an issue.
