Downtown LA’s original party palace with a retro-style diner, killer pool scene and high-design rooms
Playful urban party pad. The minimalist lobby feels more like a hotspot nightclub, with acres of dark marble, neon lights, mirrored columns and boxy pink sofas. The 24-7 Restaurant is impossible to miss for its retro banquettes in electric yellow shades where model/actor types sup on nouveau diner fare. The rooftop bar makes a splash with space-age waterbed pods, a heated pool, DJ booth and knockout views of downtown and the mountains in the distance.
Bed & Bath
Guestrooms are delightfully uncluttered with a minimalist white and gray palette punctuated with pops of lemon yellow. The devil is in the details: low-slung beds dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets, video art installations on flatscreen TVs and massive lacquer and chrome tables that can double as a work desk or bar (or a late-night dance surface). The sexy bathrooms are not for the shy — in some rooms, tubs the size of a plunge pool sit in the middle of the bedroom, in others glass walls make shower time showtime.
Expect comfort classics at The Restaurant, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, too. The portobello mushroom fries do a particularly good job of soaking up the cocktails from The Rooftop or outdoor Biergarten, as does the ahi tuna sandwich served on a steamed bao bun. If you left your hipster-essential shades at home, stop by the boutique for a new pair of frames, then hop over to Rudy’s Barbershop to get your ‘stache manicured.
In the Area
Downtown LA is going through its renaissance, with many young creatives moving back to capitalize on the bustling businesses the neighborhood has to offer. Stroll over to the Grand Central Market, a historic landmark building dating back to 1917, where you can sate yourself on everything from craft coffee at G&B to authentic Thai street food at Sticky Rice. Then take in the reflective stainless steel curves of Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, or walk down Gallery Row to see work from local artists. Finish off the day with a prohibition-era cocktail at Cole’s or a tipple at whiskey bar Seven Grand, located on the pedestrianized 6th Street, which is dotted with indie shops and stunning art deco buildings.
