Landmark 1929 Art Deco hotel atop Sunset Boulevard with a chic celebrity watering hole and dazzling views
The white tower façade features zeppelins and airplanes along with Adam and Eve carvings — this is a building on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The limestone lobby floor leads to a fireside lounge bar, the restaurant or the 81 guestrooms and suites, where everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Frank Sinatra to Elizabeth Taylor has been a long-term resident. Upstairs, Old Hollywood glamour is alive and well, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the hills or downtown L.A., muted colors, black-and-white images on the walls, walnut paneling, round mirrors, brass inlays and Jerusalem limestone bathrooms with oversize bathtubs and Kiehl’s products. The hotel is also pet-friendly, so your pooch can curl up with you on the custom Euro pillow mattress and the Egyptian cotton linens.
In the Area
You’ll want to spend some serious downtime people watching at the outdoor Terrace eatery and pool area — flanked by mirrored columns and 14-foot Moroccan palms, it was featured in films such as The Player, The Italian Job and Get Shorty. The Tower Bar is not short on Hollywood history either; this great perch for live music, cocktails and hearty bites (chicken pot pie and lobster tacos), was formerly Bugsy Siegel’s apartment. Make sure you look the part and book an appointment in the sprawling white marble two-story salon and spa (they can even give you a Botox shot) before you venture out — and be sure to relax in the hammam, as it’s the only traditional Turkish wet room in L.A.
