Converted Art Deco cinema in west London with Asian-inspired rooms, a plush cocktail bar, and a Shanghainese restaurant
In a converted Art Deco cinema, this chic retreat from Hong Kong-based hotel brand Dorsett (its first European outpost) brings a taste of East Asia to west London. The grand 1920s façade remains but the contemporary Chinese-style interiors bring together black lacquered furnishings, bird motifs and a striking gold atrium. The hotel feels more intimate than the room count of 312 would suggest. The Zen color scheme combines bright white walls and furniture, 30s-style velvet seats, graphic print carpets, and gold Chinese toile wallpaper, along with Asian-inspired statement pieces like jade-green bird lamps and embroidered throws and pillows. King beds, free WiFi and mineral water, and triple-glazed windows come standard, and while most overlook the atrium, some offer views of Shepherd’s Bush Green. Start the day with breakfast at Pictures, an all-day dining spot adjacent to the lobby that serves brasserie-style dishes for lunch and dinner. Or rise later and try the dim sum brunch at Shikumen, a sultry Shanghainese restaurant adored by London’s food critics. In the sparking atrium, the Jin bar serves classic cocktails and an afternoon tea with an impressive selection of Chinese brews. Head up to the top floor for an East-meets-West treatment at the spa, or relax in the steam room or the infrared sauna.
In the Area
The hotel is a five-minute walk from Westfield, an upscale mall with a designer village (Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry), a champagne bar and an impressive food court including Byron for British burgers, Wahaca for Mexican street food and Comptoir Libanais for Middle Eastern meze. Top musicians often stay at the Dorsett when playing at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, a few doors down. Built in 1903 as a music hall, this characterful venue offers an eclectic lineup; it has played host to everyone from Charlie Chaplin to the Rolling Stones. The Shepherd's Bush tube station is a five-minute stroll from the hotel; jump on the Central Line and you can be at Oxford Circus in 20 minutes and Notting Hill in five.
