Art-filled crash pad with an impressive 19th-century façade in London’s literary neighborhood, Bloomsbury
Located in Bloomsbury (onetime home to such literary luminaries as Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes and Charles Dickens), the late-19th-century Radisson Blu Edwardian Bloomsbury Street is a chic crash pad with access to some of London’s best sights. The public areas are decked out with huge mirrors, gold velvet sofas and oversize orange vases on huge wooden tables. Original works of art fill the hotel, and in keeping with the area’s history, an installation made from pages of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway sits behind the reception desk and the hotel runs a monthly literary salon, Hidden Prologues, hosted by Sam Leith, the literary editor of the Spectator and the Evening Standard.
Bed and Bath
A seventh floor was added to the property in 2012, and it's home to 11 of the more spacious rooms and suites. It’s made up of six Exclusive King Deluxe Rooms and five Exclusive Studio Suites. The rest of the 174 guestrooms are Standard and Superior Queen Rooms, Business Class Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and Luxury Suites. Each is kitted out with a kingsize bed clad with a sink-into mattress topper, a flat-screen TV and all the latest magazines, from Time to Harper’s Bazaar. Double-glazed windows block out much of the street noise, and some of the rooms look out over the British Museum. Many of the bathrooms come equipped with a tub and have Essential Elements by Gilchrist & Soames toiletries.
Cozy sofas, black-and-white photography, Venetian chandeliers and tall copper vases fill the sultry bar, while the restaurant has black leather chairs and screens that pull across to make the dining room more private. Bag a table by the enormous windows for the best people watching. The name tells the story at Steak & Lobster Bloomsbury; dine on succulent ribeye or a whole lobster and unlimited fries for less than $30 a pop. A traditional afternoon tea including scones and clotted cream, finger sandwiches and dainty pastries, is served daily.
