Gentleman's club turned discreet townhouse retreat in Mayfair with a Michelin-starred restaurant and an impressive art collection
In a posh enclave of Mayfair, between two of London's Royal parks, St. James’s Hotel and Club is a discreet 60-room retreat in an elegant Victorian townhouse. Small and intimate enough to maintain a boutique feel, it also has the space to offer some of the best hotel rooms in the city. The emphasis here is on personal service and absolute finery, in no small part thanks to the renovation by Berlin design firm AMJ Design. The rooms are light, airy and spacious, and amid the ornate decor have all the gadgets you'd expect from a modern hotel, from flat-screen TVs to iPod docks and free WiFi. The mattresses are handmade by Hypnos and are reputedly the comfiest in the world, dressed with fine linens of umpteen thread count. Wallpapers in handmade silk complement the black lacquered furniture and Murano chandeliers. The sleek bathrooms are done in polished natural stone and chrome. Some of the Deluxe rooms have private balconies, while the larger Executive Rooms sit on the upper floors (several have four-poster beds, balconies and views of Park Place or the courtyard). Junior Suites offer separate living and sleeping areas. The on-site restaurant, Seven Park Place is helmed by William Drabble and picked up a Michelin Star less than a year after opening. The intimate dining room caters for just 26 covers and serves dishes influenced by classic French cuisine but made with British ingredients.
In the Area
Pop into Westminster Abbey, to see where Wills and Kate wed in 2011, or scale Westminster Cathedral's tower to peer over London's skyline at 210 feet. If the weather permits, rent a deck chair ($2 for an hour) in St James's Park, the oldest of the capital's eight royal parks, and shop for a picnic in the impressive food hall at iconic department store Fortnum & Mason. For a posh take on Britain's national dish, the Indian curry, head to the Cinnamon Club, located in the old Westminster library. The area of St. James’s is home to White Cube, one of the world’s most important modern art galleries. Check it out and challenge your tastes and preconceptions.
