Affordable, tech-savvy design digs in central London, with a fashionable lobby and hot-spot bar
It's full-on Britain mania at Dutch hospitality group CitizenM's third London property: bold interiors feature sleek black surfaces set against pops of U.K. colors (i.e. ruby red and royal blue) while the sprawling residential-style lobby is decorated with framed Union Jacks, bulldog statues, and bell jars full of cricket balls. Together with oversize sofas, Eames chairs, and bookshelves stocked with curated tomes about art and design, the atmosphere is both cheerful and sophisticated. Proving that the brand takes its “affordable luxury” credo seriously, a stylish 24-hour eatery on the ground floor does triple duty: it morphs from a coffee shop in the mornings to a daytime restaurant and then a nighttime cocktail bar and offers a help-yourself selection of fruits, juices, and pastries from nearby Borough Market. Most of the 370 rooms are under 200 square feet, yet feel spacious thanks to wall-to-wall windows with sweeping city views, strategically placed king-sized beds (topped with soft Italian linens), clean-lined Vitra furniture, and glass-pod rain showers. Perks like international plugs, free on-demand movies, and tablets that control blinds, lighting, and temperature make the deal even sweeter. Business travelers, or anyone who wants to spend some time on their laptop, can head to societyM, a creatively designed meeting and co-working space on the seventh and eighth floors. For an antidote to email fatigue, head to the adjacent bar, which offers signature libations like chai-infused whiskey alongside some of the best views in town.
In the Area
CitizenM is located above Tower Hill underground station, just steps from historic attractions like the Tower of London, that most infamous of prisons, Tower Bridge, an iconic suspension bridge built in the 1800s, and the charming Trinity Square Gardens. The area is a short walk away from the south side of the Thames, home to Borough Market, one of the most renowned food markets in the world, and the fantastic Tate Modern contemporary art museum. If you walk north instead, don’t miss the Old Spitalfields Market about 15 minutes away. This covered market, which is still up and thriving after more than 300 years in business, is a true Victorian gem filled with fashion finds, antiques, and food.
