Lombardy’s enchanting city of Bergamo, northeast of Milan, is brimming with artistic treasures and packed with medieval Renaissance and baroque architecture. Sweeping views over the southern plains and a host of fine-dining restaurants add to its many charms. The city comprises two distinct parts: the ancient hilltop Città Alta (upper town), a maze of tiny cobbled medieval streets encircled by Venetian walls, with the famous Piazza Vecchia at its heart, and the more modern Città Bassa (lower town) below, reached by a steep funicular railway.
In a prime position in Città Alta, near the top of the funicular, sits the charming Fuoriporta House, an intimate and friendly boutique bed and breakfast. Housed in a picturesque old building, the interiors here are decidedly chic, with bold feature wallpaper in the guest rooms and a designer feel throughout. Enjoy your morning coffee up on a flower-filled terrace overlooking the little train as it rolls by. Downstairs, you’ll find a lively lounge bar favored by locals and an exquisite sushi restaurant next door.
The Superior rooms offer 215 square feet and are cheerfully decorated with bold patterned wallpaper. You can also opt for a Deluxe room, located at the front of the hotel and boasting 270 square feet of space, as well as extra perks, like a bathrobe and slippers.
The downstairs Lounge Bar opens early for breakfast, which includes a tasty selection of pastries, cakes and blended fruit and vegetable juices. The lunch and dinner menu offers everything from fresh salads to classic pastas. Next door sits RYU sushi restaurant, offering a tempting array of beautifully presented dishes.
The hotel is located in Bergamo Alta, right next to San Vigilio Funicular and a short walk from Piazza Vecchia. Wander the lovely cobbled streets, packed with beautiful craft shops, taverns, wine bars and restaurants, and discover the hidden charms of this gorgeous area. While here, you can also take a day trip into Milan – about an hour’s drive away.
How to Get There
My husband and I spent 3 nights in this house. Location excellent once we got off bus from airport, which cost 2 euro and 30 mins later, we were literally feet away from accommodation. Very clean and modern room deluxe room not overly big but had everything we needed. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Brill breakfast and we had a welcome drink and nibbles on are first evening which was very thoughtful. Loved this place and will definitely be back.
Such a beautiful little hotel, just by the city walls. In a perfect position. Charming interior decoration. The owners have gone to a great deal of trouble to get tiny details right. We had a deluxe room for three nights which was perfect. Breakfast on a little terrace. Great for a mini break.
We had one night in Fuori Porta House. The staff were efficient, courteous and friendly, and the food was good. You couldn't pick a better located hotel for visiting Bergamo Citti Alta, it's right next door to the upper funicular (makes no noise), and very close to the old city (right next to one of the old gates, as the name suggests). We loved our short stay.
We stayed in this house for 3 unforgettable nights, the rooms were newly redesigned in a very nice way we booked the room in the roof which has windows and ceilings windows so its amazing. I loved the staff they were super friendly. The price is very good and the location is the best. I will definitely visit it again
Good base and based on the reviews we read, we decided to stay here. After battling initially to access it as Bergamo doesn't have too many access roads or parking, we managed to park our rental in the parking space allocated to us and were shown to our room - very modern and clean however not to our taste. The owners were very friendly however cannot say the same for the very young staff. Also they are on the street and seem to attract the locals who use it as a pub and stopover so the guests in the hotel take second place. The first night we stayed there, they were having a private function and all we wanted to do was look at the balcony where we would be having our breakfast only to be rudely ushered away by one of the staff - uncalled for.
If you are looking for somewhere for more mature couples, I would find another hotel as this is not ideal - more suited to younger crowd who don't mind the noise.
Cannot fault location though - right near the heart of Bergamo and situated in front of the funicular so easy access and it wasn't at all noisy.
