Lombardy’s enchanting city of Bergamo, northeast of Milan, is brimming with artistic treasures and packed with medieval Renaissance and baroque architecture. Sweeping views over the southern plains and a host of fine-dining restaurants add to its many charms. The city comprises two distinct parts: the ancient hilltop Città Alta (upper town), a maze of tiny cobbled medieval streets encircled by Venetian walls, with the famous Piazza Vecchia at its heart, and the more modern Città Bassa (lower town) below, reached by a steep funicular railway.
In a prime position in Città Alta, near the top of the funicular, sits the charming Fuoriporta House, an intimate and friendly boutique bed and breakfast. Housed in a picturesque old building, the interiors here are decidedly chic, with bold feature wallpaper in the guest rooms and a designer feel throughout. Enjoy your morning coffee up on a flower-filled terrace overlooking the little train as it rolls by. Downstairs, you’ll find a lively lounge bar favored by locals and an exquisite sushi restaurant next door.
The Superior rooms offer 215 square feet and are cheerfully decorated with bold patterned wallpaper. You can also opt for a Deluxe room, located at the front of the hotel and boasting 270 square feet of space, as well as extra perks, like a bathrobe and slippers.
The downstairs Lounge Bar opens early for breakfast, which includes a tasty selection of pastries, cakes and blended fruit and vegetable juices. The lunch and dinner menu offers everything from fresh salads to classic pastas. Next door sits RYU sushi restaurant, offering a tempting array of beautifully presented dishes.
The hotel is located in Bergamo Alta, right next to San Vigilio Funicular and a short walk from Piazza Vecchia. Wander the lovely cobbled streets, packed with beautiful craft shops, taverns, wine bars and restaurants, and discover the hidden charms of this gorgeous area. While here, you can also take a day trip into Milan – about an hour’s drive away.
How to Get There
We visited Bergamo for 3 nights staying at fouri porta.
From the airport there’s bus number 1 that will take you all the way to the hotel ( last stop) and from the hotel to the airport back.
All people working there are really nice, smiling and try to help with tips and information.
Breakfast was good and on our last day, leaving early, they offered to prepare some things beforehand so we have some breakfast for the way.
Location is next to the funicular to St Vigilio and 1 minute from the Cita Alta walls.
In 5 min walking you are in the heart of things.
We stayed in the last floor, has roof windows with remote controlled shades that was nice.
Room is modern, shower and bathroom are separated.
I would definitely stay here again.
Best of genuine Italian hospitality - Fuori Porta House - a lovely boutique hotel located in Bergamo Alta.
Only 6 stylish rooms, bar, a nice pizzeria downstairs, private parking. They serve delightful breakfast with fresh brioches and eggs made to order, in warmer months you can enjoy it on the terrace. Some rooms open to the funicular which takes the most curious and determined tourists up over Bergamo.
The hosts are amazing and eager to help and assist in any matter.
Grazie di cuore per la vostra gentilezza ed ospitalitá!
Had a wonderful few days in Bergamo at Fuori Porta House. We spent a long time researching our New Year break and this small boutique hotel appeared to be one of the nicest places to stay in Citta Alta. We were initially a little put off by some reviews saying the hotel played loud music and had wondered whether to cancel in actual fact we found it quiet at night.
The hotel is indeed just as nice as the photos and is set just outside of the walls of the city, the staff were extremely friendly and the breakfasts each morning were gorgeous with lots of wonderful pastries and coffee.
Bergamo is wonderfully romantic at this time of year with Christmas music piped into the streets and lovely twinkling lights.
Would return to both the hotel and Bergamo
My husband and I spent 3 nights in this house. Location excellent once we got off bus from airport, which cost 2 euro and 30 mins later, we were literally feet away from accommodation. Very clean and modern room deluxe room not overly big but had everything we needed. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Brill breakfast and we had a welcome drink and nibbles on are first evening which was very thoughtful. Loved this place and will definitely be back.
Such a beautiful little hotel, just by the city walls. In a perfect position. Charming interior decoration. The owners have gone to a great deal of trouble to get tiny details right. We had a deluxe room for three nights which was perfect. Breakfast on a little terrace. Great for a mini break.
