Overview

A serene stay in the Città Alta, with its cobbled streets, medieval architecture and views of the plains below

The Lowdown

Lombardy’s enchanting city of Bergamo, northeast of Milan, is brimming with artistic treasures and packed with medieval Renaissance and baroque architecture. Sweeping views over the southern plains and a host of fine-dining restaurants add to its many charms. The city comprises two distinct parts: the ancient hilltop Città Alta (upper town), a maze of tiny cobbled medieval streets encircled by Venetian walls, with the famous Piazza Vecchia at its heart, and the more modern Città Bassa (lower town) below, reached by a steep funicular railway.
In a prime position in Città Alta, near the top of the funicular, sits the charming Fuoriporta House, an intimate and friendly boutique bed and breakfast. Housed in a picturesque old building, the interiors here are decidedly chic, with bold feature wallpaper in the guest rooms and a designer feel throughout. Enjoy your morning coffee up on a flower-filled terrace overlooking the little train as it rolls by. Downstairs, you’ll find a lively lounge bar favored by locals and an exquisite sushi restaurant next door.

Rooms

The Superior rooms offer 215 square feet and are cheerfully decorated with bold patterned wallpaper. You can also opt for a Deluxe room, located at the front of the hotel and boasting 270 square feet of space, as well as extra perks, like a bathrobe and slippers.

Dining

The downstairs Lounge Bar opens early for breakfast, which includes a tasty selection of pastries, cakes and blended fruit and vegetable juices. The lunch and dinner menu offers everything from fresh salads to classic pastas. Next door sits RYU sushi restaurant, offering a tempting array of beautifully presented dishes.

Location

The hotel is located in Bergamo Alta, right next to San Vigilio Funicular and a short walk from Piazza Vecchia. Wander the lovely cobbled streets, packed with beautiful craft shops, taverns, wine bars and restaurants, and discover the hidden charms of this gorgeous area. While here, you can also take a day trip into Milan – about an hour’s drive away.

Characterful small hotel best for couples

Fab small hotel conveniently located right next to the upper town, Citta Alta Fenicular (up to the Vigilio Castle) and Gate to the old town (Sant Alessandro). The Gate is the final stop for the airport bus from Milan Bergamo airport. At €2.70 it’s the cheapest airport transfer I’ve had for a long time. The hotel has a restaurant and bar area with seats inside and out. There’s also a great pizza place right next door and fine dining options up at the Vigilio as well as in the old town itself. We really enjoyed the hotel. The stylish room 25 had everything you could want but it wasn’t designed for any degree of modesty. The shower and toilet are in separate closets both with glass doors. The shower is completely see-through and although the toilet door is smoked glass it doesn’t shut properly. Not great if you’re with a friend rather than partner or if you’d rather pee in private! The sink area is in the bedroom so washing your hands after a middle of the night loo visit will wake ep your room mate. It all looks good but one night of it drove us mad!

Great location and amenities

Stayed there with friends for two nights. Just great, very well designed rooms - not big but ok and modern, fantastic location at the gate of old town, excellent public transportation connections. The breakfast was ok but need to be better to get 5 stars.

One of the best!

While not a traditional business hotel, this is truly one of the best hotels I have stayed in in many years of travel. The hotel itself is really quaint and situated on the edge of the old town with a great pizzeria right next door. The rooms are stylish and well appointed with everything a business or holiday traveler could want; comfortable bed, good shower and good WIFI. Clearly management are very attentive and everything is clean and well kept. They serve a great breakfast too.

On top of all this, management and staff are so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with style and grace.

I hope to get the opportunity to go back some day.
