Overview

The Review

Hidden in gardens behind a paved entrance court, the creamy stone Clos d’Amboise gives the impression of gracious French living and retains the feel of a private home. This is neither a château hotel nor a luxury palace, so don’t expect legions of flunkies or extravagant room service. What you get instead is low-key, tasteful, friendly service and a place to relax and absorb the atmosphere, whether you’re here for a romantic weekend or a family holiday.

A closet with minibar and safe, and a chest of drawers provided plenty of storage, and there was even an air conditioner, cleverly hidden in a wooden case. The bathroom was gleaming white and brightly lit, with attractive old mirrors, double basins, and excellent water pressure (Some rooms have baths; others have walk-in showers).

All the rooms are different and full of personalized touches like eclectic carved antique mirrors, old prints and paintings on the walls and leather club chairs sitting cozily in front of a marble fireplace. The third-floor mansarded attic makes up for what it lacks in headroom with a glimpse of the Château d’Amboise across the rooftops. Most of the Junior Suites can sleep three, while the Prestige Suite, created earlier this year in the pretty creeper-covered former staff quarters, has either a separate living room or second bedroom, and its own door out onto a tiny private hedged garden.

Breakfast is a civilized affair, with excellent crusty bread and croissants, fresh fruit and a pyramid of local goat cheese, served in the paneled salon, where a log fire burns in the winter. The gorgeous garden is a real plus too, with its spacious lawns and ancient cedar tree, made for tranquility.

Wonderful Hotel

We loved this hotel. I made reservations on line and was very happy. The hotel has a nice yard and you can sit outside and just enjoy your visit. The pool looked lovely but we did not go for a swim. Our room was very charming, and had an updated bathroom, the bed was comfortable, and the room had air conditioning. We also ate dinner at the restaurant and it was excellent. We also had the breakfast, you could get eggs your way. The staff was very friendly. You can walk around the town of Amboise very easily from the hotel. I would stay here again.

We chose Clos d"Amboise because of the positive reviews found here and agree wholeheartedly! The hotel has a lot of history and charm. It's setting is beautiful and the room decor felt very French. It's a close walk into town to visit the shops, restaurants and chateau. Friendly and helpful staff were quite accommodating. We enjoyed our short stay very much!

Paradise so close to everything

Our family of 5 stayed here for two nights. Not nearly enough time. Make sure to bring bathing suits. The pool was a small oasis. The staff went out of their way to make sure you were always satisfied.

Wonderful property and great service.

Stairs are quick steep and small but otherwise all was great. Beautiful grounds, good breakfast and excellent service. Very close to the core of downtown and the local castle. We would recommend this hotel to anyone.
