Bedroom Boutique Luxury property Suite cottage home Villa living room

The Review

Hidden in gardens behind a paved entrance court, the creamy stone Clos d’Amboise gives the impression of gracious French living and retains the feel of a private home. This is neither a château hotel nor a luxury palace, so don’t expect legions of flunkies or extravagant room service. What you get instead is low-key, tasteful, friendly service and a place to relax and absorb the atmosphere, whether you’re here for a romantic weekend or a family holiday.

A closet with minibar and safe, and a chest of drawers provided plenty of storage, and there was even an air conditioner, cleverly hidden in a wooden case. The bathroom was gleaming white and brightly lit, with attractive old mirrors, double basins, and excellent water pressure (Some rooms have baths; others have walk-in showers).

All the rooms are different and full of personalized touches like eclectic carved antique mirrors, old prints and paintings on the walls and leather club chairs sitting cozily in front of a marble fireplace. The third-floor mansarded attic makes up for what it lacks in headroom with a glimpse of the Château d’Amboise across the rooftops. Most of the Junior Suites can sleep three, while the Prestige Suite, created earlier this year in the pretty creeper-covered former staff quarters, has either a separate living room or second bedroom, and its own door out onto a tiny private hedged garden.

Breakfast is a civilized affair, with excellent crusty bread and croissants, fresh fruit and a pyramid of local goat cheese, served in the paneled salon, where a log fire burns in the winter. The gorgeous garden is a real plus too, with its spacious lawns and ancient cedar tree, made for tranquility.

1. the hotel (Le Clos): easy walk to downtown, nice yard and pool for relaxing, room was spacious, staff were extremely helpful, sauna, didn't eat at the restaurant but it looked good; only challenge was the parking-very tight, scratched the car on the overhanging branches.
2. the town (Amboise): fantastic town, centrally located, excellent restaurants, fantastic Leonardo de Vinci's castle/museum, King's castle, highly recommended.
