Discreet 16th-century townhouse with lofty suites and a courtyard spa in Ljubljana's old town
History is palpable at Ljubljana’s Antiq Palace Hotel & Spa — every nook and cranny of this early 16th-century townhouse cries out with glimpses of the past. Wherever you go, you’ll find original details that have been left practically untouched: cobblestones and pillars from the 17th century, and flouncy fountains in the courtyards. The gorgeous inner courtyard is home to lemon, lime and clementine trees, as well as local plants in antique pots. In spring and summer, guests can lounge alfresco, enjoying a drink as music wafts in from the music school and ballet academy, which sit on either side of the hotel.
Bed and Bath
The 13 lofty suites come complete with such original features as ceiling frescoes and thick stone walls. Luckily, they’ve also been thoroughly modernized, with flat-screen TVs and WiFi throughout the building. Among the plush perks are feather duvets, Egyptian cotton sheets and Bulgari or Chopard toiletries. Suites vary in size but each comes with a bedroom, living room, dining area, kitchen and bathroom (some feature a massage tub). The look of the rooms is traditional, with space aplenty, but the bathrooms and kitchens are modern.
An impressive breakfast spread is served in the inner courtyard when the weather is warm enough: fresh-squeezed orange juice, out-of-the-oven pastries and breads, a great selection of cold cuts and cheeses, goose liver pâté, smoked salmon, caviar, fresh fruit… even pickles, should you find yourself in the mood. To unwind, book a treatment at the small wellness spa and health club. It has a Kinesis fitness center and three kinds of sauna. Request it in advance and you can even get free private use of the wellness center. There are also two lounge bars, and 24-hour concierge service. This little gem of a hotel hides so well behind its discreet façade that you’d never guess it offers a whole little world of high-end perks right in the heart of Ljubljana.
