The Lowdown

The vibrant, characterful Portuguese capital of Lisbon never fails to delight – from the maze of cobbled streets and pastel-coloured buildings in the old city, to the hilly charms of Bairro Alto and watery wonders of the River Tagus estuary. Perfectly positioned for access to all this and more, Lisboa Carmo Hotel is a boutique gem housed in a rebuilt historic building, whose classic exterior belies the sleek contemporary decor within. A polished lobby gives way to an equally attractive restaurant, where you’ll be treated to a splendid buffet breakfast spread which will more than set you up for a day out and about.
Ascend up a funicular into Bairro Alto for great views over the rooftops to get your bearings, or take one of the century-old trams which will whisk you on a circular route. Get blissfully lost amid the warren of alleys in the old city, discovering myriad bars and cafes along the way. Marvel at all the comings and goings on the nearby River Tagus, from the impressive Belem waterfront with its lavish monastery and grand statues gazing across the water. Return to freshen up and refuel with a tasty dinner in the hotel restaurant, before setting forth once more to explore to Lisbon’s legendary nightlife. Lisboa Carmo Hotel effortlessly received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Great Hotel in a Great Location

We had a fabulous stay at this Carmo hotel. The boutique property is just around the corner of a lively square, with music, art or just to have a drink. Our room was a good size and had a view of the water. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud. In the morning breakfast was very good and staff was very attentive. The best part is it’s location. It was central to most dining, shopping and other activities. Something you really appreciate in the hills of Lisbon.

Fabulous location

The hotel sits on a beautiful plaza with constant activity: music day and night, arts fairs and political rallies by day. It’s also a block from the famed Santa Justa pedestrian elevator. The bed was the most comfortable of any on our trip. We got a decent rate on it, under $200/night net, by prepaying when we booked. In the immediate Chiado neighborhood are wonderful restaurants. Louder, later Bairro Alto is 5-10 minutes walk kind of uphill, and the waterfront market area is 10 minutes downhill. Really no need to take the elevator unless you would rather wait 25 minutes to get in a cage instead of walking 5 minutes uphill.

Spent one night when our flight was delayed to Cape Verde. Excellently located. Great food. Great service. Room fitted out to a good specification even have a defuser for hair dryer. Coffee in room is Nespresso pods. All different teas and complementary water.
