Dating back to 1910, the Internacional Design Hotel underwent a head-to-toe revamp in 2009, transforming the property into a sleek 55-room retreat on one of Lisbon’s prettiest squares. The carefully conceptualized guestrooms follow four themes: urban (industrial artwork and metal fixtures), tribe (animal print fabrics and earth tones), Zen (neutral hues and Asian-inspired prints) and pop (a bold mix of brightly colored walls, wacky Pop Art and ’60s-inspired furnishings). Though diminutive, all rooms are soundproof and offer delightful creature comforts including a soothing massage shower, L’Occitane bath products, a pillow menu and a Nespresso coffee machine. The breakfast room — a colorful tribute to all things kitsch and whimsical, scattered with mismatched chairs and tongue-in-cheek artworks — doubles as a hip bar and lounge area at night. On the top floor, the purple Loft room is a welcoming space to kick back or indulge in a pampering massage.
In the Area
A hub of activity since the Middle Ages, Rossio Square, with its shops, cafés and the Dona Maria II National Theater, offers the perfect starting point for exploring Lisbon. The adjacent pedestrian street, Rua Augusta, leads to Praça do Comercio, a scenic square overlooking the Tagus River. Enjoy an evening fado performance at Can the Can, a restaurant in the square where canned goods mesh surprisingly well with fresh ingredients. Neighboring ’hoods include the fashionable Chiado district, home to trendy concept stores including the recently inaugurated Chiado Factory and such restaurants as Belcanto, a posh eatery from Michelin-starred chef José Avillez.
How to Get There
The hotel is right by Rossio Square, steps away from metro, the train station, tram station including the no.28 tram. 10 minutes walk to the Placa do Comercio. There is a street full of restaurants just next to the hotel, and lots of restaurant choices in the neighbourhood.
Despite located at a busy square, the room is surprisingly quiet.
The room is on the small side though, and only a few plugs underneath the bedside table. Having said so, these are minor issues and I still recommend the hotel.
This place is just right smack into the major sights at the bottom of the hill. You have the Rossio Metro is steps from the main door, the regional train station past the Praça da Figueira and Tram 28's 1st stop, Martim Moniz is a 5 minute walk away. The TimeOut Market is also just two Metro stops away to Cais do Sodré via Azul line.
Room (4th floor) is very clean and has this nice refreshing scent every time your enter your room, loved it! Pillows are plump and soft, bed is medium firm, excellent way to relax and sleep after walking all day in the city. There is a coffee machine, makes excellent brew early in the morning. There is a large screen TV with variety of channels.
Bathroom was a good size. Shower stall has that rain-drip option...very relaxing. Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner were supplied (as expected) although the bar soap (tiny piece) was not replenished. The glass door is i think a bit flimsy, since it does not give much privacy when doing certain personal business...better off with a solid door.
Breakfast was included in our rate served on the 2nd floor. It was a spectacular array of food ranging from ham, different cold meats/deli, croissants, white bread, wheat, etc, various kinds of cakes, cereals, fresh fruits, coffee machines to make your own espresso or regular coffee. Staff was very attentive and friendly.
Overall, this place is great with its proximity to major spots in this section of the city.
Great venue, staff and location. Quirky hotel with lots of interesting elements and excellent restaurant (Bastardos). Food quality was top notch and the staff were excellent at going out of their way to make for a very memorable 60th birthday stay. Thank you! Very happy to recommend this lovely hotel and staff.
We stayed here for 4 nights. The location of the hotel is excellent just off Rossio Square on Rua Augusta. It cannot be more central than this just minutes away from all main sights.
Rooms are a bit small, but very clean and more than adequate for two people, and also comfortable. Fast and stable wifi. The buffet breakfast was really of high standard. All staff were very helpful for whatever we needed.
We fully recommend this hotel.
This is a wonderful hotel with very helpful and friendly staff and nice accomodations. The best part is its location. Centrally located between the water and everywhere else you want to visit, there is no need for a car. Everything is within walking distance. Highly recommend the Yellow Bus Hop on Hop Off tour of the city and the trip to the Sintra.
