Stunning 14th-century country house in the heart of Burgundy with just five suites, an outdoor pool and tennis courts
In the village of Leugny in the heart of Burgundy, La Borde Maison d'hôtes is a charming country house with just five characterful rooms. Originally a moated fort built in 1363, it was converted into a private residence in the 16th century, and some of the original features remain. The interiors are by Parisian designers Mis en Demeure, and they combine historic components (heavy exposed beams, tile floors) and a contemporary color scheme (gray, saffron, burgundy). Set on 17 acres, the gardens won a Jardin Remarquable award from the ministry of culture, and the grounds feature an outdoor heated pool and tennis courts.
Bed and Bath
The five suites are between 322 and 1,076 square feet, and all come with handmade beds by German brand Schramm, plus such cozy features as beam ceilings and open-hearth fireplaces. Modern amenities include Nespresso coffee machines and L'Occitane bath products.
Feast on local fare at breakfast, including fresh breads, pastries and homemade jam. The property is a traditional B&B, but dinner can be requested with 24 hours notice. The set menu is made with vegetables, fruits and herbs grown in the garden, as well as ingredients bought at the local market. Kick back with a glass of local wine by the outdoor pool or practice your serve on the tennis courts. The small spa can be booked privately for two hours and features a steam room, a sauna and a Massothermie, a high-tech massage table.
In the Area
Consult the owners for tips on the best local wineries to tour. There are plenty of wine-tasting opportunities in the region, including Domaine Alain Geoffroy, a family estate established in 1850, and Tixier Vineyard, a small family business that covers 17 acres. Local chateaus include Saint Fargeau, Ancy-Le-Franc, home to the biggest collection of Renaissance murals in France, and the 11th-century Chateau Ratilly, which hosts regular contemporary art exhibitions. For a shopping fix hit Auxerre's Old Town to browse the boutiques that line the cobblestone streets, or rummage for bargains at the designer outlet mall in Troyes. The hotel is a two-hour drive from Paris.
