Opulent hillside retreat overlooking the Eternal City, with a three-Michelin-starred restaurant and a palatial spa
Atop Monte Mario, the hill that dominates the Eternal City, Rome Cavalieri is an opulent retreat that offers five-star service and views to match. Set within 15 acres of lush parkland, the hotel is tricked out with the kind of luxe trappings you’d expect from this Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts property, including one of Italy’s best restaurants, the three-Michelin-starred, La Pergola. Interiors are typically Italian, with acres of marble, chandeliers, elaborate wall paintings and a museum-quality art collection and all of the 345 spacious guestrooms feature balconies. Resort amenities include four swimming pools, five restaurants and bars, a palatial spa with a Turkish bath and two Davis Cup clay tennis courts.
In the Area
The hotel is a good 30-minute taxi ride (or free shuttle) to the city center for Rome’s classic sights including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. Stroll across the Tiber to Trastevere, arguably Rome’s loveliest pedestrian district; it’s home to the famed Porta Portese flea market, some the city’s best traditional thin crust pizza joints, and the hypermodern Glass Hostaria (try the chestnut tagliatelle). And don’t miss a peek at La Bocca della Verita (The Mouth of Truth), featured in the classic 1953 Audrey Hepburn film Roman Holiday.
How to Get There
The hotel room, spa and fitness room was excellent. Very nice indoor/ outdoor pool setting although we did not use the outdoor pool, due to off-season. Breakfast buffet had a large variety of options.
but not far from everything you want to see and do in Rome. Exceptional hotel. Our upgraded suite had a marvelous view of the city and a full veranda. The Imperial Lounge provided day long refreshments.
My husband and I stayed for 5 nights in September as part of a month long European vacation. This resort is a place where you could spend your entire vacation and not have or ever want to leave, but there are also so many things to do in Rome. This is a full service resort from the world class spa, more on that later, 3-Star Michelin Restaurant, La Pergola (see my separate review for that), restaurants, pool, hiking and exercise trail, free shuttle to central location in Rome. This resort is the perfect balance of a tranquil resort property located just outside of Rome proper with easy access to all of the sightseeing.
As I continue my review, my husband and I are comparing this resort to some very exquisite and beautiful resorts that we have been fortunate enough to travel to, such as the Conrad Bora Bora (overwater bungalow), Conrad Dublin, Conrad London, Hilton Athens, Arizona Biltmore, Hilton Los Cabos, Hilton Waikoloa and many more.
We were there for a very special occasion, and we were greeted by Roberta and she welcomed us with a huge smile and professional greeting and quickly whisked us to private check-in with Sabrina who is an angel! Roberta is always available when you need her but never obtrusive. We are Diamond members and the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf really took the time to appreciate us as guests and make sure that our every moment was filled with perfection. For example, we were privately escorted to our room overlooking the Vatican. The view was so peaceful and panoramic. On the way to our room, we were given a tour of the Imperial Club. The Imperial Rooms are really a hotel within a hotel and the Imperial Club is the best lounge imaginable. From early morning until late evening, cuisine and beverages are always there, perfectly presented. Prosecco in the morning, just stop by the Imperial Club. Wine and canapes before dinner, all day buffet of deliciousness, the Imperial Club is there to keep you thoroughly satisfied.
The rooms/suites have the most extensive array of cosmetics/essentials/hygiene kits from a hair brush, comb, razor and shave cream, toothbrush and paste, tweezers, scizzors, nail files, facial mist, hand cream, eye cream, face cream, and of course shampoo, conditioner and body wash all from the wonderfully aromatic and high quality Salvatore Ferragamo. The facial mist is the best! Towels and essentials were abundant. And there is a towel warmer rack in the shower. The balcony is large enough to fit 4 people very comfortably sitting around a table, and we overlooked the pool, spa and the Vatican. It seems that all rooms have an amazing view, whether it is of he beautiful grounds for lower floors or scenic views for higher floors. Housekeeping was perfection!
We took a nice walk around the grounds where there is a workout circuit, and we also went off grounds, taking a right on the sidewalk as you exit the front of the hotel and we walked up a hill by a schoolyard and saw amazing views of Rome.
We were fortunate to meet the GM, Alessandro, and he is the ultimate in professionalism and has a team that consistently throughout the resort made us feel that our happiness was the primary concern. And they succeeded in a huge way! Alessandro is thoroughly a hospitality expert and he will make sure your every need is taken care of. He was so kind to us offering us gifts of Champagne, fruit baskets, celebratory cake, it was dreamlike to be at this resort and be taken care of so well. We truly felt like royalty! The Cavalieri is fortunate to be run by such a competent and exquisite leader.
Breakfast buffet is my favorite ever! The most perfectly picked and peeled fresh exotic tropical fruits, pastries that are drool worthy, European style delicious cheeses, meats, salads, yogurts, and home made hummus with pomegranate and flatbread, a delightful array of hot goodies, and an Asian section. There was also home made lemonade slushies and of course delicious coffees and waters and much more.
Additional shout/out: SABRINA: Please when you stay here, stop by and say hello to Sabrina in the Front Office management. She not only looks like an angel, she acts like one. She sent beautiful gifts to our room for our celebration, and we were spoiled at this hotel like no other. If you have any questions about anything, Sabrina is the go to person. In fact, of all the people we met at all of the amazing resorts over the month long trip, Sabrina was the single most memorable. You know when you can tell that someone is really interested in what you are saying and paying attention and will take care of your every need, that person is Sabrina! She is a star on the rise to the top! Sabrina and her team make everything seem effortless. Sabrina's excellent interpersonal skills, and her professional ease are the perfect combination for the Cavalieri. There is no possible way our stay could have been any better because of Sabrina! I actually miss her!
ALBA: When I first entered the Grand Spa, Alba immediately greeted me with a huge, genuine smile. She is truly a gem. I have been to a fair number of resort spas, and unfortunately many of the people working at these spas have a pompous demeanor. Not Alba, she is the type of person that can make anybody feel comfortable from the Queen of England to the person experiencing their very first spa. This quality that Alba possesses is the type of quality that brings people back again and again. She took the time to ask us about what treatments would be exactly perfect for each of us, and every day after my fabulous facial, when I saw her in the spa she would help me apply some moisturizer to leave with a glow on my face. When I told her about our reservations at La Pergola, she took such interest in making sure that I would look my best when I asked about a hair appointment. Then she even went one step further and asked me if we would like her to take some photos of myself and my husband dressed up before our reservation. We used the award winning spa daily for free as Diamond members. The indoor jacuzzi and lighting made me feel like I was transported back in time to a Rome of many centuries ago. The temperature and waterfall in the jacuzzi were beyond relaxing. There was also an ice cold dip located in the intensely aromatic steam room. The relaxation room even had blankets and I almost fell asleep due to the pure relaxing atmosphere. There is also an indoor/outdoor pool and another hot and cold dip there. The best part is that the spa never seemed crowded, and in fact sometimes we had it to ourselves! There was also a nice gym which we did not use. Dressing rooms are fairly small and simple, but basic products like shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hair dryer and abundant towels. My facial was incredibly relaxing as I requested a deep tissue on my face, and my esthetician fulfilled my wishes checking in to see my degree of comfort and enjoyment.
ALLESIA (Buffet Breakfast Manager): She had a bright smile each morning and sincere greeting and gave us whatever table we requested whether it be dining al fresco or inside.
The Waldorf Cavalieri was the most courteous and most luxurious hotel of our month long trip. The professionalism and camaraderie of the team is a huge statement of the superb management approach. Thank you for giving us the best vacation of our lives! Don't miss out and stay here when you are in Rome!
