How to Get There
The hotel is extraordinary. Perfect location - wonderful staff and fantastic rooms. The spa is great as well. But really the jewel is the Stravinskij Bar! Sitting outside in the late Autumnal sun eating canapes and drinking cocktails with the resident cat Monna sitting with us. Perfection.
We were very disappointed with this stay. The breakfast at this place is nothing like a luxury hotel. The suite was very okay. We left on the second day, reservation was for 4 nights. We wanted to leave on the first morning, but the hotel was applying a penalty, which we understood. The staff was friendly, service was good. We moved to Hotel Eden and experience was night and day.
I have stayed at the de Russie a number of times before this stay, as a matter of fact I am a loyal Rocco Forte guest in several of their hotels, staying with the hotel group 6 times last year. Each time I have stayed at a RF hotel the experience has been delightful but above everything the service was superb on every level. That was not the case during my latest stay at Hotel de Russie in Rome.
There were several small issues like a smelly corridor and one day my room not being cleaned and made up in a timely way, that might have been overlooked had it not been for the total lack of service by both management and staff.
That second evening of my stay I went down to their garden terrace bar, one of the highlights of the property, and on a warm Friday evening it was the perfect place to kick off my night. The bar is very popular with the locals and is a hangout for very posh Romans. It was early and I asked the hostess politely if it was possible for me to sit in a particular area and immediately got some attitude from her. She pointed to a table at the end, next to the shop. I don't usually fuss about table placement, but I had sat at the same table the night before and found it awkward. At the time I didn't make a fuss or ask to be moved, but now on my second evening I didn't want a repeat of sitting in what seemed like the least popular table. So I asked if I could sit at one of the other free tables, mentioning I was a guest of the hotel. The hostess said curtly, no they were all reserved, in a very take it or leave it tone she said that table she had pointed to was the best she could do for me. So I asked to sit inside -the last thing I wanted to do on such a fabulous evening and she asked if I guest at the hotel. Why yes, something I had mentioned before which clearly she didn't pay attention to. Could she make me feel any more unwelcome? I went inside, made the best of it, and had a drink at the bar then got on with my evening. When I returned after dinner, I stopped in again to have an after dinner drink -and to finally enjoy the garden a little bit. I sat for over 20 minutes and not one person working there approached me, offered me a drink, a menu, a hello even. Getting tired I walked into the bar and asked for a drink to take up to my room and said I had waited over 20 minutes with absolutely no service let alone acknowledgement to my being there. I went to the concierge desk and reported the incident before going up to my room.
The next day there was no mention of it. No one from management called or approached me to inquire about the problem, let alone apologise or offer any explanations for the rudeness and lack of service of their bar staff. And I think that was the worst of it, the insult to injury. Here I was a loyal guest, staying at RF hotels for over many years, who had a bad experience at their hotel, and no one put forth any interest. Was it because I was a woman traveling alone? Whatever it was I was shocked as the service was usually much, much better and no one seemed to care.
As far as positives, one area that did exceptionally well was the breakfast service. Mario and his team were so charming, welcoming, and couldn't do enough for myself and all the guests. The breakfast was very good, and the staff absolutely delightful. The property itself is stylish and the location of the hotel couldn't be better on the fashionable Via del Babuino.
But unfortunately the rudeness of the bar staff and the lack of care or follow up by the management tainted the rest of my stay. So much so that I doubt I will go back which is a shame as my previous stays had been enjoyable. But if this is the treatment a repeat guest receives, then how are other guests being treated.
