Casino resort where you can bet big at the tables, dive with sharks, or chill at the beach
Mandalay Bay squeezes so much to do under one roof that it flouts Vegas’s recent move toward niche markets, opting instead to offer something for everybody. Its democratic appeal starts on the gaming floor, which has a wide array of limits, every table game imaginable and a full slate of other options, including a poker room and one of the city’s best sports and race books. There are also loads of gambling-free destinations, including two shopping malls, two spas and even a shark-filled aquarium. The resort also sports the most elaborate pool complex in a city known for its pools: 11 acres of pools, lagoons, lazy rivers, beaches with 2,700 tons of sand and a wave pool so impressive it can host pro surfing contests.
Bed & Bath
The magnitude of the place is driven home by the size of its guestrooms; the smallest is a sprawling 550 square feet. When it opened in 1999 Mandalay Bay was among the first to embrace the new era of Las Vegas hotels, with rooms that were not mere motel-style afterthoughts but well-equipped sanctuaries. Fresh off a remodeling, Mandalay Bay has put its digs back on top, and now they pack up-to-date technology (flatscreen TVs, WiFi, iPod docks), mod furniture and large stone bathrooms with twin vanities, soaking tubs and walk-in showers.
Food and entertainment is where Mandalay Bay rises to the top. It has multiple live performance venues and routinely attracts big names like Bob Seger, Pink, Styx and Zac Brown. The dining choices are staggering and mouthwatering, from the Tex-Mex of TV’s Two Hot Tamales at Border Grill to surf and turf at Michael Mina’s STRIPSTEAK to the progressive American Cuisine at Charlie Palmer’s Michelin-starred Aureole.
