Island getaway

Dos Palmas is the destination of our outing. Maximum of 3 days is enough for this place because it is an isolated mini island.

We had all our meals in buffet style. Most of the food are great (seafood karekare, fish, crabs, shrimp with cheese, crepe, yogurt, blue marlin)! I always have my belly full.

It is quiet as there are not so many guests as well. There are also lots of facilities and activities that you can try e.g. kayak, snorkeling, swimming pool, tennis court, basketball court, billiards, table tennis.

The rooms are far from the dining area thus it is better to always take a bike if you don’t want to walk. Our room is big and clean. I would just like to have a better lighting (white light).

The place is maintained except for the pool. The infinity pool is not so clean. It should have been maintained. The lap pool is cleaner but small.

We stayed in Dos Palmas on April 2015 for 3D2N. The boat ride from the port going to the island was around 1 hour and I must say it was a scary one for us because of the big waves that we encountered.

Upon arrival at the hotel, we were surprised by how big our room was. Not to mention the beachfront view awaiting us from the veranda.

I must say, though, that the rooms and facilities looked kinda old. Perhaps a few renovations might do the trick.

Food was okay and very affordable than what we previously expected. Downside though is that the beach was low tide most of the day so we preferred to stay at the pool.

Overall, it was still a relaxing vacation for us. A quick getaway to this island will give you enough time to unwind and recharge from the busy life in the city.

Mini island getaway

A very quaint small island resort with eco friendly amenities and a beautiful white sand beach. The hotel is situated in Honda Bay, and provides free airport transfer via a van pick up which takes 30mins to Honda Bay port and from there it takes about 1hr by boat to reach the island. The island has roughly 80 rooms, 2 swimming pools, a spa, tennis and basketball court, one restaurant, one shop and free bicycles for you to roam around. The best thing about the island is the staff. They look like they are genuinely happy working on the island. A lot of the times they would be playing basketball together in teams.

We were provided with welcome drinks and a tour of the island before being escorted to our villa. The room was basic but very clean and large with great air con. There were no TV or Wi-fi in the room, Wi-fi is only available near the restaurant, so come if you want to relax and get away from the internet/email for a few days.

Food: although there is only 1 restaurant on site, the food is actually pretty good. As mentioned by previous reviews, the resort attracts a lot of Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese tourists, and the food is geared towards Asian flavours. The service is excellent and the waiters are attentive. There are also live music and singing on most nights.

Activities: there are plenty to do on the island. On top of the activities mentioned above, they also have 2 videokaroke rooms, pool tables, cable tv at the bar and table tennis tables. The hotel also provide a free island hopping island tour at 10am everyday, which consists of a 20mins boat ride to a nearby sandbank for swimming and snorkelling, lasting about 2hrs. It’s also a perfect place for drone shots. The hotel also provide free boat transfer to the two nearby platoon for snorkelling which departs every 30mins. However, the snorkelling isn’t the best, the corals are not very colourful and there were not a lot of fish. We spotted a baby black tip reef shark. There was a sunken aircraft nearby, but that’s about it.
Spa: we did the Him and Her package, the prices were high compared to massages in Puerto Princesa, but consider it’s an island in the middle of the ocean, it’s still fairly reasonable, especially when comparing to prices back in the UK.

Other: we were warned that the island has 2 mandatory power shut down to conserve electricity, this happens between 10-11am and 4-5pm everyday. However during our stay, they didn’t enforce it.
There were some ants in the room, but try to stay in an upstairs room to minimise them.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Dos Palmas, it’s perfect for a few days of relaxation, but you may get bored after a while. But be warned, there could be large group tours arriving which can make the place a bit noisy.

Quiet and wonderful

We have stayed in Dos Palmas resort last may 2-5. Mostly, the visitors are from China, Korea, and Taiwan.
This place? Its very natural and the people who works here are the main reason why the resort is wonderful!
The room:
We stayed at Villa B, our patio view is wonderful! The room is kind of old, the furniture in the patio is old (we are afraid to sit on it because of insects hiding in there) the lamp is old or maybe they are into vintage style of room. Housekeeping is spectacular! They manage the room to be clean everytime we come back from our activities.
The restaurant:
The only thing I like about this restaurant is the breakfast (very fresh and bacon everyday!!!!)
We tried their alacarte menu (crispy kare kare is superb!)
The dinner buffet they serve is okay, there are food that they serve during that time is okay (baked shrimp, teriyaki, chicken curry, sweet & sour fish) but some of them I dislike the taste (crab and corn soup, chili and garlic pasta, squash soup) the only thing I want to point out is, we are in a private Island and people will not go and take a wharf during dinner time just to eat in the main city. They have to make their food really good and tasty. I hope the next time we come back the food is in good quality and very tasty so we will be in our full belly and leave the restaurant satisfied. I heard some tourists they take the wharf in the main city and eat there or buy something to eat before dinner time as the food is not very tasty. I mean, its a beautiful place and food should be amazing.

I would like to give my full thumbs up at our driver to and from the airport. We forgot to get his name but he is very hospitable, he bought us watermelons and accommodated our request for getting sunblock at the nearest pharmacy. I remembered my mom forgot to buy “bonamine” but we were at the main port for the Wharf transfer and it came to our surprise that he bought it for my mom.
The tour guide who assisted us is very friendly and knowledgeable. (Did not ask for his name)
The front desk team did a great job to accommodate all of our request. (The lady who always write an invoice for us and the lady who assisted us in our room)
Mond, our server for 2 consecutive days he is fantastic! I like the fact that he is very caring for the guests and he remembers us. I was sick at the time we went for dinner and he immediately asked me if im okay and offered the nurse in-house.
The lady who assisted me at the souvenir shop.
The General Manager who uplifts and support his employees. (We met him and talked to him at our departure)
The boat transfer team who made this little creations out of the palm leaves (THEY ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE!)
Our tour guide for the island tour, he is knowledgeable and very friendly.

Loved every minute of our stay!

I rarely write reviews, only for the extremes (the really bad & the excellent ones). We stayed in Dos Palmas for 5 days, 4 nights & we loved everything about that stay, really memorable. You won't need internet here.

The food is delicious & relatively cheap, considering the fact that the resort is on an island, where resources are hard to procure. There are no hidden charges when you dine. They have hefty servings (their bowl of rice, worth PHP30, is good enough for two people). And they have live entertainment nightly.

We loved snorkeling. They have a nice spot just for that activity. You can borrow the snorkel & vest for free, as well as the kayak.

The service was excellent, superb, absolutely no complaints, not even petty ones. We will definitely go back to Dos Palmas!
