How to Get There
Can’t give the place a Five, although, it is quite good overall. Two main issues: the place is too spread out for those walking in ski gear, and the rooms' setup and equipment is questionable.
This property is right in the small prettied-up touristy section of South Lake Tahoe city and it is blended into the roughly 3 small blocks long “village” to a point that you wouldn’t notice it when driving if not for the small sign by the driveway: no usual Marriott logo visible from miles away. The Heavenly Ski resort access is steps away: the gondola on one side and the shuttle bus on the other. By the way, no one at the Lodge tells you about the bus, but that is the way up to the ski trails when the gondola is grounded due to weather. In general, the concierge tells you “we have no ties to Heavenly”, which is weird as the places seem literally as parts of a single development. Anyways. If Heavenly appears too expensive or too Disney-like place to you, other ski resorts are a short drive away, given the roads are open - get the CA HP realtime app. However small the place looks like on the map, when walking it in ski boots and/or caring equipment, it is hu-u-uge. The corridors are long and winding. Could’ve been it designed differently? It does form a perimeter around the pool and hot tubs area, so, probably, the architects didn’t have much to play with, and it does look small on the map. Just walk it in the gear and you’ll see what I mean.
So, you know CA conserves water. The Lodge took to the limit with the toilet flush: the vacuum works as you’re on the Space station, and the sound can be heard floors and rooms away: loud popping all night long. No other CA hotel I stayed in had anything close, so I think this is a very inconsidered overkill for a vacation establishment. Although, if your furnace is on, you get a different space station-like sound experience which silences the flush pops.
The room size seems a bit smaller than at other Vacation Club properties I stayed in. The décor is timber and metal. The dining table screwed to the wall, so one side of it is wasted, and it only sits 4 people comfortably. There is also a table behind the sleeper – not sure what purpose it is supposed to serve – you can’t get to it, but, it doesn’t take much space either. No balconies, except, maybe, at some selected suites.
The center court outdoor area is heated and beautiful when it snows, although, the hot tubs get crowded with drinking public in the evening. There is a posted 9 PM – 7 AM party curfew in the buildings, and things were pretty quiet the weekend nights we stayed. We rather were the offenders, but, somehow, our connecting door neighbors didn’t report us – might’ve gotten into a deep sleep before we started. No other explanation as you can pretty much hear even a normal speech through that door.
The parking can be a pain as it is either valet or garage. There are published parking arrangements with how you book your stay. Technically, there is some free parking within 10-15 min walk that locals know about, but when paying hundreds of dollars for lodging and skiing each day, extra $30 for parking is a small bit.
The front desk and concierge staff appear slow – but they are on Tahoe time and in CA state of mind, and they don’t get angry or offended when asked to hurry up.
There are all kinds of skiing and walking even in harshest winter conditions the area gets, the air is unbelievably clean and everything is just too pleasant to notice small inconveniences. But there are some, so, it’s a Four this time. Will check the place out in summer probably next.
As part of an extended ski vacation I was able to trade my Time Share in Aruba ( I know what was I thinking but I am glad I did) and stay at the Marriott Timber Lodge. This Hotel is located at the base of the Heavenly Valley Gondola as well as the center of town.
The staff was excellent, and if you do not like to ski and have kids there are plenty of activities going on all day. They have several pools an Jacuzzi on the property a perfect relaxing night after a hard day on the slopes. The casinos are located in a short 3 minute walk and there are plenty of places to eat.
The rooms are very large we had a 2-bedroom unit with a double lock off, full kitchen, washer & dryer as well as a fireplace in the living room. As perfect resort.....
After a lovely drive from San Francisco we arrived in Lake Tahoe... the cozy lobby of our hotel welcomed us. It was a cold, dark night, but getting to our room changed it all: well needed space (we were traveling with our 5-year-old girl, and my sister); touching details, like the fire place! What a great use of the space! Hiding in the kitchen area we even had a washing machine and dryer! (very useful, by the way).
Our resort villa was our home away from home for 5 days! It has a prime location in Heavenly Village, steps from top attractions... we enjoyed every minute!
There is a playground (indoors) for the little ones. If you are traveling with little kids, you appreciate this kind of facilities.
It was worth traveling all the way from Lima, Peru!
We wanted easy access to skiing, and this resort was certainly it. Spacious rooms, great lobby with fire pit, helpful staff—-all you could need! The gondola is literally 20 steps outside the lobby!! They store your skis right there, if you choose.
Parking is around $30 per day, so that’s a bummer.
We stayed here on January 18th for two nights. We enjoyed the food and the bed was comfy. Staff at the lodge were friendly. We would recommend this place. Unfortunately my Husband broke his shoulder on the last day 12 Kim’s from finishing and had to continue biking to the car park. A trip we won’t forget!
