How to Get There
This is a decent place for value, depending on the price for given dates. Depending on the weekend, rates can be reasonable and the location is great, right by the gondola. Outdoor pool and hot tub are nice. Staff is friendly.
Overall, if it’s a lot cheaper than Harrah’s or Harvey’s, then great - go for it. If not, the casinos are much better and worth the 4 minute walk.
Note - I have included a general warning about Heavenly mountain below at the bottom. If you haven’t been before, please read it!!
Grand Residences drawbacks:
- The overnight storage is awful - they seem to have contracted with Heavenly Sports instead of having their own. The employees of HS are excruciatingly slow - it took them about 30 minutes to take 10 customers equipment. I left the line at that point and just decided to keep my gear in my room. Terrible “valet” storage.
- There is no room service option for food
- They actually do not even have small items for purchase. So if you want to get something without going out in the cold/snow, you are out of luck
- The South Tahoe Express (the most reasonable way to get to/from Reno) does not stop here.
- Rooms are old and dated. Kinda scary actually. More like hostel rooms (but without hostel prices). (I stayed here on a weekend that my wife could not come - I would never make her stay here!)
**** HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN WARNING - For anyone who has not skied Heavenly - they do a LOT of days with wind holds and lift closures, especially on this side (gondola side). If you have a choice, consider skiing somewhere else (or have cancellation insurance and cancel out if a storm is coming). They sometimes get a lot of snow which is great - but not when 2/3 of the lifts are closed and the other 1/3 that are open were only open for 2 hours. This sort of thing can happen for many days in a row if it is windy or snowing. This might apply to other Tahoe ski resorts too, not sure. But having skied all over the world, I have probably had only one total day like that anywhere else in the world. At Heavenly, it has happened almost every time I have been there, at least one day of the trip, but often more.
I spent a delightful week at the Grand Residences over Chinese New Year. The location is perfect - within minutes you can be at the gondola, plenty of restaurants and shops, and a grocery store across the street, all within walking distance. The staff was great and the rooms very comfortable. I can’t tell the difference from the Marriott Timber Lodge, where I stayed two years ago, but the Grand Residences were great and I’ll go back again in the future.
I stayed at the GR by Marriott in South Lake Tahoe during the last week of January 2019. Although the focus for this family outing was skiing and winter fun, we decided to try Latin dance sessions in the evenings. The instructor - Alejandra - beats any typical expectations for such sessions. My granddaughters and I enjoyed learning the steps of Marimba, East Coast Swing and Waltz, but also the great personality, professional prowess and warmth of Alejandra. After a couple of sessions, we felt like coming to a party! I also re-discovered the value of Latin Dancing as an apres-ski activity that loosens your muscles and makes you feel great the next morning and ready for another day at Heavenly.
Bravo Mariott and Alejandra for this very special social complimentary activity for guests.
Very conveniently located near the Gondola, makes it very easy to get up and return from the mountain. Marriott offers free ski valley to the guests. Check out the daily activities. They offer intertanement for kids and adults. Dance class with Alejandra is a must. Complimentary wine tasting in the lobby, etc. Amenities are not top of the line, however everything is in the working order and clean. Planty of good restaurants within walking distance. Nice atmosphere of a ski village.
I am beyond pleased with my stay and experience here. We had to leave early because my daughter got sick, the hotel was so accommodating. Beautiful grounds, just have to get used to hearing people walking through the busy areas (it echoes if you have a balcony). Totally quiet in the other room where my daughter slept. I left some clothing items since we had to rush out before the next big storm, and they still had them in lost and found when I called a few days later! I will definitely be back again. You guys are great there. Giving Marriott back their good name. :)
