Former 18th-century palace in a fairy-tale setting overlooking Italy's second-largest lake
Set on a hill overlooking Italy’s second-largest lake, the breathtaking Lake Maggiore, Castello Dal Pozzo is an example of neo-Gothic elegance. This 18th-century palace was originally built by the Visconti family and later owned by the Dal Pozzo family for six generations. Opulent chandeliers, heavy, ornate drapes and fine crystal stemware decorate the public spaces, but there's nothing stuffy about the place — the feel is that of a private home rather than a hotel.
Bed and Bath
The 30 guestrooms in the Palazzo are richly decorated in a springtime palette of yellow, blue and green, with period-appropriate high ceilings, molded stucco, antique furniture and large marble bathrooms. The Junior Suites are dressed with original Victorian furnishings and come with enormous beds clad in fine Egyptian cotton. Stunning prints and pictures on loan from the Dal Pozzo family estate are dotted around the walls.
The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Le Fief, offers an innovative take on regional classics and uses local ingredients. The setting itself is wonderfully romantic, and in the warmer months you can request dinner on the quiet terrace, which overlooks a huge fountain. The hotel has its own private wine bar, Dal Pozzo 24, which can be booked for tastings, dinners or special occasions.
In the Area
After a stroll in the lakeside town of Stresa, take a ferry to the Borromean Islands, the most gorgeous of which, Isola Bella, is entirely occupied by the Palazzo Borromeo and its magnificent Italianate garden. The massive alpine chain of Monte Rosa encloses the lake with peaks that reach over 13,000 feet. An extensive selection of slopes is available for all levels of skier. Thanks to a special partnership, guests of Castello Dal Pozzo can take advantage of the discounted rates at the 27-hole Golf Club Castel Conturbia, just 20 minutes away.
