Original Playboy Club less than two hours from Chicago, with two golf courses, three restaurants and a spa
In the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, wealthy Chicagoans migrated north, eventually making Geneva Lake an exclusive summer destination for wealthy Midwesterners. In 1968, Hugh Hefner built an enormous leisure pad, christening it the Playboy Club & Resort. Now Grand Geneva Resort is the marquee destination in one of the Midwest’s most storied enclaves.
Bed and Bath
The guestrooms have all the creature comforts: billboard-size flat-screen TVs, gas fireplaces and separate sitting areas. All guestrooms have balconies overlooking the sprawling resort or fairways of the golf course. Simple bathrooms are done up with granite top vanities, in-mirror TVs and amenities by Well Spa + Salon.
The Lodge features indoor and outdoor pools populated by sun worshipers by day, and firepits roaring against the chilly Wisconsin air at night. The sunken lobby acts a sort of nerve center for the resort: wedding-goers, business travelers, weekenders and families meet under antlered chandeliers and then head to dinner in one of the three top-notch restaurants — one Italian, one a chophouse and one a mix of American classics. Check out the weekly newsletter and choose among a horseback ride, a visit to the Well Spa & Salon, a dip in the junior Olympic pool, an aqua Zumba session, a nature walk, an zipline adventure over the gorgeous Wisconsin landscape, or a visit to nearby Geneva Lake.
In the Area
Want to be a voyeur? There’s no better way to sneak a peek at how the wealthy live than to check out the lakefront mansions during a journey with Lake Geneva Cruise Line. Undoubtedly the nerdiest (but most rewarding) tour is at Yerkes Observatory, operated by the University of Chicago, where stargazers can look at distant stars and galaxies. Or scream yourself hoarse as you zipline among the tallest trees in Wisconsin at Lake Geneva’s Canopy Tours. For a less adrenalin filled excursion, stroll down the main drag in Lake Geneva and sort through the eclectic mix of vintage finds at Funky’s or the more designer togs at Notice.
