The Howbeck "retreat room" & staff
Reviewed 5 days ago

We visited the Howbeck and retreat on Friday the 8th of march for a little relaxing getaway for 2 nights. Our plan was to get up sat morning and climb the scafell pike mountain then get back to the room and relax in the bath jacuzzi. We booked the room directly with the hotel over the phone weeks earlier with Naomi and my partner specifically booked the room for 2 nights. On arrival we were pleasantly greeted by Naomi and shown to are room after having a discussion with Naomi about climbing scafell pike the following day and arriving back to the hotel. We couldn't fault the room it was immaculate and just what we needed. We decided to get in the jacuzzi and watch some tv, this ran cold rally quick and certain parts fell to pieces. About 9 o clock that evening we got a call off the hotel saying can we keep the noise down and the room above us was complaining of noise. This was just ridiculous as we only had the jacuzzi jets on and the television just loud enough so you could here it. We deceived to laugh it off and not let it spoil our night. The following morning we were served breakfast in the room which again could not fault. It was lovely. We then began on our adventure climbing scafell pike. We only managed to get there around dinner. We then finished around 5 and had some food in the local pub. During this time we had no signal on our phones as we were in the middle of nowhere. On our way back to the hotel around 8pm the Saturday evening exhausted and just wanting to get back to a jacuzzi bath and relax, we noticed we had a missed call from the hotel as our phones signal finally got service. We phoned them back thinking they was just wondering what we wanted off the menu for breakfast served in the room. IT WASNT!! We was greeted by Naomi who very kindly informed us that she'd been trying to get hold of us all day. We were told we had only booked for 1 night. And after we had'nt checked out, they'd took it amongst themselves to go into our room, collect all our personal belongings and put them in the basement to allow for other guests to stay in that room that night. If it was our mistake that we had only booked for 1 night then we would of been a bit more understanding. After getting back to our hotel to collect our belongings we were shown to our cases which had been thrown in the resteraunt area. They were opened up with all our dirty laundry on show and valuables for anybody to see. Obviously we weren't happy. It was now 9.30. We were exhausted and had to find another hotel to stay as this hotel was now fully booked. They'd already taken the remainder of the balance from my card earlier that day which I was not going to pay for there mess up. We could of been dead up that mountain or anything, and they just decided to throw all our stuff out of the room and take payment off us. We were told by the receptionist there was nothing more she could do, we would have to speak with the manger Aga on Monday as I wanted some sort of compensation. My partner spoke directly with the hotel on Monday morning and again they was very rude straight on the defensive saying there was nothing they could do and it was our word against there's. We asked to see the terms and condistions on numerous occasions about where it states you could move our personal belongings. The hotel I belive panicked and therefore escalated it to Colin monk the CEO who emailed my partner, again we got no further with the terms and conditions but was presented with a threatening and belittling email off Colin who was even ruder than the rest of the staff. Can see we're they all must get it from. We was told by him that if we were to leave a negative review or slander them in any way they would be forced to take legal action and take compensation off us. I was mortified at the whole attitude! I'm sorry Colin but reviews are there for a reason, to be left negative or positive. We have left a honest review based on our experience with this hotel. It completely spoiled our weekend. I cannot fault the room apart from a hot tub that does not heat properly or really thin walls that you can't go about your own business , but the behaviour and attitude of the full Howbeck and retreat staff as disgusted me!! I gave Colin a whole week for him to reply and in some way redeem themselves but now they have just ignored our complaint. Therefore they have left us no option to give an HONEST review.

The guesthouse rooms are wonderful, the staff are so friendly and helpful, brilliant location with Windermere and Bowness within walking distance. The staff booked a restaurant for us one evening and as a result we got a discount. Planning our return already.

Quaint delightful hotel

Went on short notice with another 2 couples. From the outside it looks really small, however once inside its perfect, immaculately decorated and spotlessly clean.

We were greeted by a really nice lady who quickly booked us in and gave us information regarding the spa, the breakfast and the honesty bar.

We were in the Lingmell which is the first room as you enter the hotel. The room was amazing, large, bright, clean with tea and coffee and biscuits and water etc

I was concerned as we were on the front and by the door that we wouldn't sleep well, but I had the best nights sleep I have had in a long time.

The honesty bar is a great idea and we used it when we came back in the evening.

You pre order breakfast and all of it was amazing, hot, fresh and well presented, There is the usual cereals, yoghurts, fruit etc, and a toaster.

All in all couldn't fault the place and would highly recommend. Approx 15 minute was into Bowness.

Birthday treat
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My partner booked this hotel for my birthday and we stayed in the ‘windygale’ room. My partner had arranged to have extras for the room as a surprise for me. The room was decorated beautifully with rose petals, chocolates and champagne. The room was spotless and the spa bath was the icing on the cake.
Breakfast in the morning was delicious.
Would defiantly stay again. Thank you.

Quiet and Quaint!

My partner and I stayed here in September 2018 and were initially surprised at how small the building is, however, upon our stepping inside we were amazed at just how much was there! A lady greeted us as we entered and informed us of the whereabouts of our room, which was easily located upstairs. She also informed us of our exclusive access to the spa facilities, though I hadn't known prior to our stay that the spa wasn't on-site, hence my only rating 4/5. Had I known this, I likely wouldn't have booked The Howbeck, though I'm glad I did as it was a genuine, lovely experience.

It is truly in the finer details that our stay was made memorable. Upon booking, I asked for a few romantic touches to be added to the room in order to surprise my partner. We were shown to our suite, wherein we found a box of chocolates, complimentary water, complimentary alcohol - which we were certain was port but this may need to be confirmed! - rose petals scattered across the bed and fairy lights decorating the headboard. Both my partner and I were delighted that so much care and attention had been given to our room! The bed was incredibly comfortable and I slept like a baby - something that rarely happens when I stay in a new place.

The decor of the building and the room was beautiful, particularly with regards to the modern black and white bathroom, accompanied by a very relaxing jacuzzi bath, bubbles and all! We were given a key to get back into the building in case we were to stay out late, and were given slips to fill in on the evening of our stay to let the staff know whether we wished to have breakfast. My partner and I chose to have the scrambled egg and salmon, served on an English muffin. The eggs were cooked to perfection, not too runny nor too hard and very creamy! The salmon was full of flavour and the toasted muffin was perfect as a base. As someone that normally eats her scrambled egg on plain old toast, this was a welcome change!

I'd definitely stay here again. We felt welcome throughout our stay and were cared for beyond measure. Everything we needed or wanted, we had! I'd recommend The Howbeck to anyone, particularly couples looking for a romantic weekend away.
