How to Get There
Spent the week after Thanksgiving at Secrets PC. Overall we enjoyed our time at the hotel but thought the connection with NOW was a little weird. The NOW resort pool and landscape was much better than the Secrets. If AMResorts was doing their research they should of flipped the two and Secrets should of been the NOW side and vice versa.
he beach was wonderful, daily walks and watching the sun rise was amazing, it's a must do!!!
All of our SPA services were amazing, If it wasn't for Alber in the Spa "HydroTherapy" area we might not of enjoyed ourselves as much, he made the experience much more enjoyable.
We are by no means foodies but the food was just okay, thankfully we had the other options within NOW.
Our pool water from our swim up suite Angel was amazing, always had our drinks ready with a second one on the way!!! Very hard working and super friendly.
All in all, we would go back to Punta Cana but we would stay at the same resort.
I am comparing this property to 7 other Secrets and Now resorts where we have stayed. The resort itself was very clean and in good condition. The check in was quick and easy and everyone was friendly. I upgraded to Preferred at check in due to my past Preferred experiences. I was able to get the Preferred service but they were out of Preferred rooms. This wasn't an issue because they pro rated the fee and I was happy with the room provided (4374). We spent a lot of time at the non Preferred pool because we were with a large group who did not upgrade. This is were the experience fell very short of previous Secrets resorts. The resort is very under staffed and it shows. The drink server at the pool was over whelmed and you had to wait 45 minutes for a drink. They tell you verbally and with signs in the room not to drink the tap water yet they ran out of battled water several times at the pool and preferred bar a lounge. The restaurants all had wait times but when you were seated there were always numerous empty tables with no servers to work them. The food in all the restaurants were very good and always hot and fresh. There were some excellent servers in the restaurants and I wish I would have written down more names. The servers that stood out were, Modesto, Ariel, Super Juan in Portifinos and Junior at the Preferred pool. The buffet was only fair, breakfast was the real disappointment. My biggest complaint and may be the straw that broke the camels back was the Preferred lounge. Every time I went there the food table was almost empty and old. Once there was no dinner plates to obtain food if I wanted. Each time we asked for a drink they were out of something to make that drink and even out of bottled water. All other Preferred lounges always had an attendant that kept everything clean, full and fresh. This was a absolute frustrating joke of a Preferred lounge. I did complain to Mary the front desk Manager who was very friendly and accommodating. This resort really makes me rethink my loyalty to Secrets resorts because of the inconsistency with quality of service from the same brand.
I'll start with the room which was great, no complaints really. Very spacious, clean and had all the amenities one would expect. Maid service was good and the fridge was always well stocked with bottled water and beer.
Around the hotel everything is well kept, clean and the staff are friendly. The lazy river is great albeit a bit cold when you first get in. Get there early if you want a lounger as there aren't enough for everyone who wants one. Same with the beach, by midday all the loungers are usually taken. Waiter service around the pool could be a bit slow. Sometimes we'd be waiting half an hour before anyone came along and then another 20 minutes for the drink to turn up. We didn't venture into the main pool as it was always full of Americans who all seem to think that everyone needs to hear what they have got to say. The same annoying song comes on at half 3 everyday brought to you by the incredibly annoying 'entertainment team' followed by some modern dance/RnB rubbish. If you want a peaceful holiday stay away from the main pool.
Cocktails. Wow, the cocktails are bad. There is clearly no mixology training that goes on. Essentially they are slushies with some rum poured on top. Everything is premixed and they don't use any fresh ingredients. This is the Caribbean and I couldn't even get a proper Daiquiri as the lime juice was out of a bottle and was full of sugar. After 2 cocktails my teeth were coated in sugar. Really disappointing.
There is a decent choice of food but none of it is great. A few lowlights were a medium-rare steak that came burnt to a crisp, a pad thai that tasted like an Indian curry and some rather dubious sushi. The buffet had a good selection but it's all pretty average. The best outlet is the barefoot grill which serves beautiful chicken and burgers on a lunchtime. There are always huge queues at breakfast for omelettes and fried eggs and the toaster. God knows why they can't put fried eggs out separately to help with the queues and get another toaster.
Entertainment is average. Spa prices are ridiculous. If they just charged sensible prices then we would have taken them up but they were around $150-200 for a one hour massage.
Just returned from Secrets Royal Beach after a great week's holiday with my girlfriend. We chose Secrets again after staying at Secrets Resorts previously. Secrets Royal beach is linked to two other hotels (Now Larimer & Now Garden) but stay at Secrets, there is a distinct difference in the quality and cliental, it is also adults only. Secrets guests can use the other two but they cannot enter secrets. I would highly recommend this place but just misses out on the 5/5. Firstly the positives:
Rooms: very spacious, clean and tidy. The facilities all worked, the room was cleaned every day along with the fridges restocked. Lights down service was also a nice touch. Room service was also very quick with all the staff a pleasure.
Pool: There is a lazy river is you want some peace & quiet as well as a main pool which includes a pool bar. The staff at the pool bar are fantastic but special mention must go to Alberto who was by far the best and friendliest bar tender we had all week. There is a foam part at 3pm multiple times a week which is a lot of fun.
Entertainment: The entertainment team are highly enthuastic and try their best to get as many people involved as they can. For each activity you participate in you receive a voucher which you can collect and spend at the auction which they have a few times a week (but you need 30,000 at least to have the chance of winning anything).
Food: The restauants are very good. There is plenty of choice across the hotels with pretty much every type of food available and no reservations required. Portofino (Italian) is the best restaurant make sure you go there and have Willy wait on you he's amazing. Breakast and lunch buffets have plenty of choice and all very accomodating. Melinda greeted us every day and was lovely and friendly and we were waited on by Alejandro who couldnt have done more for us so thanks to both. During the day there is a grill where the amazing Maximo grills Chicken, Burgers & Fish all day, there are also salads and other meat available. Maximo deserves so much credit, I visted him every day and he is such a hard worker so please ensure my thanks and gratitude make it to him.
Beach: I've read a few reviews about the amount of sea weed. Dont listen to them, the sea weed is inevitable but the staff work hard to clear this up multiple times a day. The beach is lovely, plenty of space to chill, get involved in activities and also a beach bar.
The entertainment in the evening is ok, more sophisticated than next door's, they also have a rainy day alternative. Visit the bar next to Portofino run by Israel and Santa. These two are amazing and make the experience so fun. Thanks to both. If your night gets a bit wild there is a club in Now Larimer, a sports bar and a casino.
I should also mention Jennifer at the front desk who dealt with some of my queries fantastically, she was very friendly and professional.
Now, a few negatives to why its a 4/5 not a 5/5:
Pressure to upgrade: They ask you to attend a "30 minute" meeting on your first morning. We knew not to do this from previous Secrets stays. Unless you are interested in a time share do not do it, it takes 3-4 hours and the staff pressurise you into it. We saw so many couple not knowing what was going on.
Ricardo on the front desk: I have to name this guy, he was so rude! He refused to change some money for me (despite somebody doing it a few days before with no problems) and was unbeliably rude to me when saying no. He should not be working on the front desk and i hope the General manager has a firm word with him upon reading this.
TV in room: barely any English channels but not too much of a problem.
Some staff are rude unless you tip them. Most are friendly but others seem to only want to be nice if they get tipped.
Allergies: The buffet does not cater well for food allergies. My girlfriend is Gluten Free and this section was tiny and the staff did not have any knoweldge of what food was GF and what wasnt.
Portion Sizes: In the restarants the portion sizes are small so order more. I had two starters most nights.
Also if you want a lounger by the pool ensure you are there before 8am or you will not get one!
All in all the positives outweigh the negatives therefore i would recommend people to stay here and we will continue to stay at Secrets resorts again in the future.
Oh and take repellent because you will get bitten!
Not quite a two week trip to heaven! The Preferred Area staff excelled and took care of our every need, and the bartenders and servers at the pool/beach were excellent. Shout out to Apolinar who booked everything for us, and actually did the job of our butler except for room service. We always feel very welcomed and pampered at this resort
